Is McDermott's job security in danger

McDermott is NOT leaving.
I don't know how you fix/correct defensive problems with Petersen or Brackins or that other skinny guard who should never be dribbling as point guard. I don't know how you fix defensive problems with kids who quit team faster than Illinois Governors are imprisoned.
McDermott will be servicable, but it will be another 2 or 3 years. We might beat Iowa at home every other year. We might make the tourney every 3rd or 4th year or so.

Now, football. What a freaking mess. Let's leave MacD alone and worry about Football. We have kids, despite the mess we know is there, that could have beat KU and should have beat 3 or 4 other teams.....the problem was coaching again.

NO WAY will McD be fired. He took a bag of crap, and is working to sort it out. Clearly it cannot take forever, but I'm willing to give a pretty long leash to McD.

Let's not turn a Chizik situation into a McD situation.

IMO if we don't make the NCAA's next year the fanbase will have officially bailed.

Honestly it's looking more and more like Jim Woolridge 2.0 here.

To me, what you described above is a mess. The NCAA's every third or fourth year? I have higher expectations for this program.

So are the players inable to stop dribble penetration? Do they not know the basics of defense? How about blocking out?

Well either the players aren't executing or McD didn't teach them defense. Which do you think is more likely?

From what I am seeing on a consistant basis, I would say the latter...

For the record, I am not saying to fire McDermott. I had SERIOUS doubts when he was hired and still do. I think he can get it done but needs to make some big time philosophical changes...

Do NOT fire McD. He has HIGH quality players either signed or interested in ISU. I DO NOT want to lose those kids. We need continuity. He has some of the highest caliber recruits EVER looking at ISU. Colvin is a huge get and, in my opinion, is an instant upgrade over Garrett. Gilstrap is putting up insane points at Juco and will provide that middle game we are missing.

I KNOW people get tired of this...but it really will get better for basketball.

As for football, screw it. That is a train wreck.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...our program has been in a slow downward spiral ever since Floyd left. Giving up on our coach now only gets that process sped back up again after it finally started slowing.

Like it or not we have some good talent coming in that if we just give a chance we all could be very impressed. It's been a long long time since we've had a solid bench or incoming recruiting class.

Right. I'm excited about Staten, Dykstra, Colvin, and Gilstrap. I also like the possibility of guys like Kelm, Barnes, and Shaw. These are talented kids. It will get better. We don't need coach of the year. We need consistency and time to recruit using guys like D rob.

Funny, the Elite Eight trip came after Floyd left.

However, across the board you are correct. The program is just beginning to regain momentum once more after a series of disastrous events. No reason to shake it up once more.

Especially since, at 6-3, there's no reason to just assume that we're going to have a losing season.

I don't think we'll have a losing season. We play too many patsies in the non-conference and the Big 12 north is as weak as I can ever remember it.

There is no big 12 north in basketball, only football

Every 3rd or 4th year? YOU CALL THAT SERVICEABLE? I CALL THAT UNACCEPTABLE.

I'll say it again, I expect to compete for the Big XII every year!!! Be in the top 3 of the conference every year. If we don't get to the NCAA by the time Diante, Lucca, and Craig are done, then McD has to go, plain and simple. Until then, I'll go to as many games as I can and cheer them on, but I'll be honest, I'm not sold on him.

We just aren't athletic enough in the backcourt to sit in the in-your face man to man defense. I have never really understood Mac's defensive philopsophy but I cam out of a sagging, man to man, help side system. All of our guys are right on their man instead of the ball-you-man. Only thing is, we aren't quick enough to stay with them, we get drove by and back cut to death. I just don't see how we can afford to not go to a zone D.

Granted we havnt played great teams this year, but when ISU has played a zone it has been affective. McD isnt the only BB coach to lean to one type of D and I dont understand why coaches do this.
