When you make millions a year, is there really a difference of quality of life between $4 million and $8.5 million per year? That is insane money that most coaches would jump at but if you already love what you do where you are at and have the quality of life you want/need, what is the point going to the Lions when they will just fire you before the end of your contract? Not to mention you are on track to have your statue outside of JTS someday.

Depends if you want a nice yacht or not.

Matt's 41 years-old, so he could have taken that Lions contract and retired at 49 with...I don't know, 70-80 million.

Better get the mold for his statue ready.

It's the Lions. Even the best coach in the history of football could lose there. The NFL front office is what defines and enables success for any team. Good coaching is needed, but not the most important.

CMC could have taken that job, done his best, and still been fired in 3 years for not being able to do the impossible. And retired on the buyout which was probably less than the full contract amount.

Depends on what a person's tastes are, I suppose. I've run into Coach and his family eating at Old Chicago, here in Ames. So, you know he has expensive tastes. No cheap ass Dominos for the Campbells. No sir.

To be honest, if he got the same contract offer from, say the Chiefs, Steelers, 49ers, Patriots... basically a GOOD organization he might be gone. But he's smart enough to hold out for a GREAT NFL job. If he really wants to be in the NFL. It's not for everyone. Ask Nick Saban.

EDIT: Not to say even those offers would be enough for CMC to leave. Just that offers from a good NFL organization would be more tempting in general.

Is there a difference in quality of life between Detroit and Ames?

Did we ever get clarity on what he makes with his contract extension? Or what TJ is getting?

This. He can take any job he wants. Why go to the Lions?

$4M base + $250K/win starting after 6 wins. Not sure what he gets if he has post season wins etc
Through 2028 season.
So hopefully at least $5.5M this coming season.

I would assume yes honestly. That's money that can help out a lot of people and set up your families for life. He really loves it here though

It could if money was what motivated a person. But in all seriousness, he's never going to get a better deal than he has now. When you have more money than you can ever spend with millions more on the way, the ability to do whatever you want unimpeded is quite valuable. There is no job he can step up to that would that would give him that kind of freedom, especially in the NFL.

Detroit gets **** on, and with good reason, but I think it's improved since Robocop. And I think the swanky suburbs are really nice
I almost added that I haven't been there (other than flying through the airport) since about 1990 so my view of the area might be slightly outdated. But I am an Iowa kid to the core so I would rather live in Ames over a lot of places anyway.

I THINK I've heard that they've cleaned up the city quite a bit and, good or bad, gentrification has raised property values like in every major city. All the rich people live in the best suburbs anyway.

Testifying
The Lions were willing to pay Matt Campbell more than either well acclaimed coach from last year's Super Bowl.
Think about how good Matt Campbell is.
