Or that he REALLY likes teaching kids about football and life and can get paid more money than he'll ever be able to spend.

We know this for sure. I'm not naive enough to believe he will stay at ISU forever, but loyalty is in his DNA. His mentor at Mount Union was there for a long time. College football is vastly different than coaching in the NFL. Sure strategy and playcalling wise they are similar sports, but the players and how you manage them are light years different.

Campbell has to WANT to be an NFL coach for him to leave. I don't know if he does or not.

If Matt is here for the next 8 years he'll probably make in the range of $40 million ($4/yr current contract plus incentives and future raises). Once you get to that level there's not much you can do with $68 million that you couldn't do with $40 million. So it's pretty reasonable to decide based on the job and lifestyle you want.

You can do a lot with an extra $28 million. That’s starting to build multiple layers of generational wealth.

It's the Lions. Even the best coach in the history of football could lose there. The NFL front office is what defines and enables success for any team. Good coaching is needed, but not the most important.

CMC could have taken that job, done his best, and still been fired in 3 years for not being able to do the impossible. And retired on the buyout which was probably less than the full contract amount.
It's like taking the Bulls job. Some people just have better judgement.

The Lions were willing to pay Matt Campbell more than either well acclaimed coach from last year's Super Bowl.
Think about how good Matt Campbell is.
That is how good he is. Guys.... Matt Campbell CHOSE to stay in Ames, Iowa......

That is awesome. Matt will probably make close to that amount if he is at Iowa State for 8 more years. As other posters have said, the difference between like $50 Million and $70 Million to your quality of life is negligible. Do what you love. The guys buyout is over $20 Million at Iowa State. The challenges are there to keep him interested, and it is a nice town for his kids. I am glad we have Matt Campbell, a guy who wants to be great at Iowa State.

Not if you are not happy. Not trying to be a nag, but there is always more money out there somewhere. At some point you have to find your happy place.

I never once said anything about happiness. Read the previous posters comment about the difference between 40 and 68 million. That’s why I posted what I did.

I don't think any of us know what Campbell is thinking down the road. I tend to agree with this assessment. I mean how many millions of dollars do you need to live on?

Campbell is still young and in the prime of his coaching career now. I'll bet he is a workaholic, people-person, loves to be around the student athletes. Loves to see them and his coaches succeed. Why not stay here and see this thru a little more? How long, who knows.

When he's older he may feel like he needs a new challenge. I know he is likely not the kind of guy who wants to retire and fish or play golf every day. Atleast not yet. He won't retire until he's over 62-65. That doesn't mean he'll be here all that time.

Detroit is a wasteland for a job. The money is good, but no control over players. The college level allows for better job security and control of operations.

Depends on what a person's tastes are, I suppose. I've run into Coach and his family eating at Old Chicago, here in Ames. So, you know he has expensive tastes. No cheap ass Dominos for the Campbells. No sir.
But seriously, how many 5* restaurants are there in Ames, Iowa? Hehe. Good one!
