Depends on what a person's tastes are, I suppose. I've run into Coach and his family eating at Old Chicago, here in Ames. So, you know he has expensive tastes. No cheap ass Dominos for the Campbells. No sir.
I have seen him eat cheap delivery pizza. CMC can eat with Bubba or a University President and make either feel warm and fuzzy. Proboably in "The Plan" under the title: MAKE THEM ALL FEEL IMPORTANT!

“You locked down Campbell right?”

“Sure did, he just signed they contract today”

“Great, Matt will do well here”

“Matt? Dan Campbell is the guy we got”

“**** it, not like we can get any worse”

they said no formal was made. That doesn’t mean they didn’t tell our Campbell that they’d hire him and pay him 70 million.

Honestly this story (if true) is even better for us because it would imply that Campbell didn’t even spend much time listening.

Exactly. They also said there was only one interview. My guess is that they threw the offer out there after he said he was happy where he's at to see if he really was happy. That's pretty much how it went down when I received an unsolicited offer for my house.

I said I wasn't interested and didn't want to deal with the hassle of moving, and they then then threw out a huge number to see I really didn't want to move. Needless to say, I told them to come take a walk through and negotiations began.

I believe the “interview” Matt did was probably just respectfully answering the phone call and having a brief conversation with them and telling them to go **** a duck.

Of course. They wouldn't just show up in person without prior contact or interest. And considering that Campbell is his own agent, that's about the only way they're going to be able to contact him. They sure as hell aren't going to send an email to his university account where FOIA requests could be made.

I think that the story is legitimate. But one thing that really stands out is this: most coaches jump at the money because they aren't sure their "success" is long term. So they go for the cash grab when it's there. But this tells us that Campbell believes in himself and his purpose. He thinks that he will have sustained success and that offers will be there later.

As I've shared before, in a conversation after year 1 with a member of the Campbell staff, that staff knew they would eventually win and compete for conference titles here. It's not that they were overly confident in themselves, or thought they were geniuses, they just knew that following "the process" without exception eventually leads to conference championship-level football. And they knew that collectively with MC at the head they are among the tiny percentage that have the discipline to stay the course no matter what. They weren't confident it would happen, they KNEW it would happen.

That is why I have never been worried about jobs in college that are better programs than ISU, but aren't the likes of ND or OSU. With the disadvantages at ISU, they never viewed anything as an actual barrier to being a conference title or playoff contender. It would be harder and take longer, but it would eventually happen. Now eventually does he see the appeal of the NFL, or does he see that there are systematic limitations at ISU that prevent them from contending for a playoff spot with the level of consistency they expect? Maybe. But typically coaches leave a place like ISU because they don't think they can compete for conference titles. Well, they were the best team in the Big 12 last year through a round robin regular season.

- Campbell is wired differently
- Campbell seems determined to do the impossible
- The offer is oddly specific and seems suspicious that that number is legit
- Ames is more fun to bash so let’s spend more time talking about that
Ames is more fun to bash than Detroit?
