Prohm inherited a great team his first year as Coach. Murray State lost two games that year. Did not even go undefeated in the Conference.

Prohm inherits great teams. Doesn’t build them.
Yes we know you hate Prohm. So much so that I don't really value your opinion on it because you can't remove bias.

So Prohm’s problem was that he just completely sucked as a coach. He had to have superior talent and even then, he would do things as a coach to put us in a position to lose.
Pretty accurate summary by you.
I hope nobody takes my post as defending Prohm. I simply reacted to a statement about his recruiting. He got some pretty good recruits. Two of his guys are making more NBA money than any clone in history ( although not sure about Montes $).
That said, he was a terrible coach and manager of personnel. He far underachieved what talent he had. He needed to get fired. Not a Prohm fan.

Personally I think the assistant coach situation is an even starker differential than the head coaching one. Steve for his faults did some things well. DRob pulled in the THT/Haliburton class almost singlehandedly. What did any of the other assistants on that staff do? I can't remember anything positive ever being attributed to any of them. These assistants have done more for this program in two games than the last set did in 6 years.

I don’t hate Prohm. Prohm just isn’t a very good basketball coach. Taking an Iowa State Basketball Program from great success to the most abysmal season in Iowa State History is substantial evidence that Steve Prohm was not a good Head Coach. If you can’t accept that Prohm was a failure at Iowa State then so be it. That is not bias. It is fact.

I made this point in another thread, but one of the most important things a HC can do is surround themselves with good assistants.

I think TJ knocked this out of the park, especially with KG. On the flipside, it was a key component in Prohm's downfall.

It is still a wait and see situation, but the way they beat OSU was pretty impressive. Nice to see a team play some defense. Hopefully the shooting will get better as the season goes on. He seems to get the most out of his guys.

This year will get hairy at times. But I think the future is looking up for the Clones in basketball!

I agree that the future is actually promising for the first time in quite a long time. Also, I think "this year will get hairy" is essential for everyone along for this ride to remember. This team has not had any public, in-season adversity yet. Generally speaking, if anyone was teetering on the edge of being for or against the TJ hire then they should wait until we're on a 4+ game losing streak in January.

Coach Otz has been preaching about the habits and mindset to have players keep their heads down and continually put in their daily work. This is essential while dealing with the grind of a sports season with so many things outside of any one player's control.
Coach Prohm preached this too, of course. What coach doesn't?

The key to success on the court will be accountability of the players to each other and to the coaching staff. Although the accountability has to start long before game action with the coach to the players.

My current read is that Otz will do a better job on the accountability front compared to Prohm. The performance against Oregon State really elevated this optimism.

Tj still seems to be figuring this offense out. He made second half adjustments in having them attack the basket. Hunter started to get more aggressive in the 2nd half and took over the game in the final minutes. Brockington kind of reminds me of DeAndre Kane and is a stat sheet stuffer. I also like how tj gets into the game and understands how Hilton magic works. I think he’s a heck of a recruiter, definitely still learning but has installed a defensive minded team. You can tell the players enjoy playing defense it seems anyways. It’s going to hopefully keep us in most games. If we can ever figure this offense thing out we’re golden. Seemed to be getting a better feel for the offense late in the second half. I am enjoying this team. I’m all on board for TJ

Even with the smaller crowd tonight things got going pretty good in the 2nd half. The crowd and the team are beginning to feed off of each other again. It was great to see us take the T.O. when they scored those 6 (?) quick points instead of when we did. Our previous coach could never figure out how to use the Magic.

Agreed prohm had to be the only coach to always have like 5 timeouts at the end of every game

You forgot the best one. THT. Plus you can't deny Nader and Burton completely turning a corner with him. Steve wasn't good, but he wasn't awful like people thought. I am fascinated with his collapse. Hoping some day Williams will let us know.
I think I can summarize Steve Prohm’s tenure at ISU. Doubt CW can add anything.

- really didn’t know what he was doing as a P5 HC. In over his head in terms of Xs and Os and did not hire great assistants to fill that void
- rode on the back of Fred’s guys for 2 years and leveraged that to recruit a handful of high end players
- nice, honest guy who was good at building relationships which helped with recruiting
- not confident in himself or what he was doing and too eager to be liked so he never commanded the respect of his players
- is generally a wimpy guy and his lack of toughness extended to his teams, despite CSP talking about toughness seemingly everyday
- result is that his teams underperformed relative to their talent all 6 years, even the 3 bad teams

Really like watching this team. When we lose it most likely won't be because of lack of effort. Really need to find our shooting stroke. Defense will keep us in games but against the good teams we're going to need to hit the shots.
