The NWS considers 70 MPH winds to be bad enough that towns/cities now are asked to set off their storm sirens at 70 MPH.
If a storm moving 60 MPH turns severe and you are directly in the path you could have very little warning to take cover.
Seems like schools are making a wise decision. They probably have built in unused snow days anyways.
