Seems like most have tried to stay away from it but this guy's tossing out the D-word.

......................

To be fair, when I saw the projected line of storms on the futurecast on weather.com earlier this morning, I was like "darn, that looks like the derecho", and I was talking with a friend who was like "I feel like the derecho has everyone freaked out about this and preparing for this like they would have the derecho if they'd had the time to prepare"

What's the percentage that the Des Moines viewing area gets a tornado today?

From the Storm Prediction Center:
"Probability of a tornado within 25 miles of a point.
Hatched Area: 10% or greater probability of EF2 - EF5 tornadoes within 25 miles of a point."

Think I got an early dismissal last week of fall semester. For a blizzard. Jesus.
I've lived in Ames my whole life (graduated from Iowa State, naturally) and I think I can count on one hand the number of times I can remember Iowa State closing for weather, but never preemptively like this

Pressbox at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Over to the right of this pic, you should be seeing some buildings/parking garages in downtown Lincoln. Can't see a thing.

What happens to them if they lose power/internet?
You would hope they would have generators/backup power and 2 internet connections going out different directions of the building.

If they lose power or services or need to shelter they will hand off to NWS Quad Cities. Adjoining offices are all equipped, trained and drilled on how to hand off.

Can't wait for the neighbors to the south Trampoline to hit my house today. Going to be a fun conversation.

Not liking you guys telling me there have been reports of 80-95mph wind. thats not good.
My son just backed a pickup up to the trampoline from the south and chained it to the grill guard. The wind is from the south, when it switches to the north it will probably end up on top of his pickup. I probably won't mention it to him.

The pole shift is accelerating. This is what we can expect, by the end of this decade it will be apparent that Iowa is well on its way to becoming nearly a tropical climate. The question is what the Mississippi river does as far as where the coastline will end up.

Yeah, it has seemed exactly like a Derecho setup ever since the severe storm line came into play. I haven't fully understood why people have said "Isn't like the Derecho", I think it is except for the expected winds prior and after as well.

Never had one single weather day in my 3 years there. And there were definitely dates that all the area schools had shut down. Couple individual morning classes but that's it.

Never felt like it was a major deal but I lived on campus (Friley and UV) the whole time so I'm sure the commuters would disagree!
