It's a little sad (not much, just a little) to see Mizzou only filling 2/3 of its arena for a game against the #1 team.

For you young fans, I get a shiver every time Missouri basketball is even mentioned. 30 years ago, their student section, was called something like "The Elks." They supported with a whole new level. Borderline crossed the lines. I remember one game one year they got in Jeff Grayers head by chanting something very very very nasty about Grayers mom over and over. Man alive they took it to a whole new level.

I'm still scared from it and I'm 45. You mention Missouri basketball and it gets cold quickly.

There was a chance of sweeping Missouri that season. Led at half in both games ... game at Missouri ISU had a lead in second half. Couldn't close either game.
Yep, I recall that, and really looked forward to getting a rematch with them in KC. I think they were the 2 seed and we were the 3, but we lost to 6 seed Texas the first night and never got the rematch. Mizzou went on to win the tourney in their last season in the Big 12.

I found it hilarious that their not-full arena decided that with a minute to go in a close game against the #1 team in the country that they started a "F--K KU!" chant. Kansas lives rent free in their heads forever.

Didn't this group chant things at Jeff Grayer about his mom, who was terminal with cancer at the time? I was a teen at the time. After that, Misery became the team I hated the most in the Big 8/Big 12.

It may have been his grandma they were making fun of(who was like a mother to him). I believe they may have made a sign depicting her in a wheel chair. I have hated Missouri every since.

I think that was the same team that lost to a 15 seed in the first round of the Tourney the next week. Loved it.

Wasn’t it “Antlers”?

We had toy machine guns. And Norm Stewart wanted to start a fight, (back when the students were behind the visitors bench and where they should always be). He said leave the guy alone and was coming towards the stands. Ames PD had to step in.

Next year he came to the game and handed out gum saying "chew on this instead of me." Warmed up to Norm more that day.
Is this Bubbles? I saw that.

The best was when they Named that place after Paige Walton. Then they found out Paige was cheating in school at Missouri and had to name the whole arena something different.

Also sit down Norm.

I watch Missouri because Dujuan Gordon transferred there, and I like coach Martin. They're not very good. One or two guys can score. Good defense. But ISU should win this one comfortably in Hilton.

Interesting. John McPoland, then the sports editor (or reporter) at the daily, came with a toy machine gun, sat two rows directly behind Stewart and let it rip with two or three minutes to go. Stewart called timeout and then jumped into the crowd and tried to beat McPoland up. He denied it at first and then just told a reporter "I just wanted to get to know that guy."

I was sitting next to John when that happened. Really miss him taken from us far too soon.

First must win game of the season IMO. Mizzou can’t help your resume, but they can do a lot of damage

Grayer's mom had severe arthritis and he was homesick his freshman year so he went to visit her. The Antlers chanted "Momma is a cow" and someone said "Momma's Boy" to Jeff from the stands. Grayer went up into the stands after him.
