Yes, hoops could be easier because you don't need the numbers but the examples you gave don't have big football programs to deal with so they can spend a higher percentage of their money on basketball than other schools would. K-State and Mizzou have P5 football programs that will demand a lot of money so the more money the conference generates the more chances you have some left for basketball.IMO the Big10 & SEC money is a bigger factor for football than basketball. With hoops a good coach can develop a solid program on a national scale. Just look at the Big East, Gonzaga or Mountain West.
On paper I agree that Mizzou should have the advantage vs. KSU regarding recruiting because they should be able to draw kids from St. Louis & KC. But it seems that over the last decade or so, the best St. Louis kids don't consider Mizzou.
Selecting the right coach for schools like KSU, Mizzou (and Iowa State) is not an exact science. So, the argument of which school is better is splitting hairs. In both situations a successful coach is going to have to draw recruits from outside Missouri or Kansas to be successful.
If Mizzou wants to turn the corner they will have to find a coach that can keep St. Louis kids from going somewhere else. The current football coach is doing it for the first time, signing one 5 star and two 4 stars. It's an opportunity Mizzou has that K-State never will. There just won't be that kind of basketball talent anywhere near Manhattan.
