ISU had two wrestlers seeded to AA, 1 & 8--and we got three.
This seems like a good thing…

For anyone out there, can you help me figure out if this is because of bad coaching, recruiting failures, a weak schedule, or guys just not wrestling hard?

Want to make sure I fully understand the state of the Iowa State Wrestling program from all the experts on this thread.

TIA

Not exactly sure.
Haven’t heard officially but looked like a dislocated elbow. If that’s the case, he’s probably medical redshirting next year
No. He will be back, unless there was breakage. Happened to me my Jr year of HS in the first football game. I was released to play sports late January but didn’t. Things have came a ways since then also. 6 months and he will be back at it.

3 AAs is more than I expected, so overall I’m happy. 2016 was the last time that ISU had 3 AAs. The main disappointment being Carr. It’s very hard to win an NCAA championship.

I think the team is ready to take the next step, and as others have noted the schedule needs to significantly improve. We need to add another B1G team to the schedule, and get to at least one major tournament (Vegas, Scuffle, Midlands). The Big 12 Competition just isn’t preparing the team for NCAAs.

I think what set this board off more than anything has been the performance at 141 and 149. Neither were ranked high but the fanbase knows what they have been capable of and expected one last NCAA run from at least one of the guys. If that would have happened the mood would have been entirely different.

Despite the 3 AA‘s, the already posted grievances about dual scheduling, recruiting, in season tournaments etc still stands in my mind. The next two years will really define the KD era. He’s gray shirted an entire class, he will finally lose the last of the KJ wrestlers when Coleman leaves, he‘s got the two MI studs coming in…. this is the window for the program to take the next step.

i think you’re right. For some reason, people on this board had unrealistic expectations for those two weights. They were judging those guys on what they were 2-3 years ago and not what they were now.

Great day to wake up a Cyclone wrestling fan. Very happy the way they came back yesterday and wrestled hard. I still think the future is bright. Leave it all on the mat today. GO CYCLONES!!!

Open question, do you think KD purposely scheduled weak this year in an attempt to get more guys qualified for nationals knowing that if they did have a tough schedule maybe a couple wouldn't qualify?

No it was health. We were so beat up last year. Lots of coaches are trying to shorten the season. A little may have been covid concerns by the University

Count me in as wanting to get back into a couple tougher tournaments. It lets the guys know where they are at in a tournament format. Duals are a different beast, great for team work but wrestling has always been an individual sport.

Is there any way to look up on which mats our guys wrestled during Friday night's rounds? Consolation round matches are available on demand at ESPN.com. They are listed by mat #.
