Not according to some of the experts around here (and on Twitter) who have sworn that a payday is the only reason he left
Why can't it be the only reason he left knowing he's going to get something substantial but not totally sure yet on the exact amount? Did ISU have anything NIL set up 'yet' when he mulled it over. Sounds like we hadn't, since WeWill has recently been introduced. Hypothetically (and no rumor whatsoever, just throwing it out there) he could have realized he could get big money elsewhere AND be surrounded by a better 'scoring' roster to highlight his skill set. Who knows? He knew what was coming back and no idea who could transfer in yet at that time. So I'm sure he 'could' have sensed that he desired a better roster. Again....totally brainstorming here.

Is he eligible in the fall if he fails his classes this spring? How the F does a guy disappear from campus for 8 weeks and still pass? And, how does one prove integrity with online classes?
It's cute that you think academics matter.

Online classes are the best thing that has ever happened to college coaches. No more concerns ever about a kid being eligible but I'm guessing the academic assistants in departments across the country are getting tired of slightly editing the same term paper over and over to make it passable.

I was thinking about this the other day. When was the last time you heard about an athlete being academically ineligible? I can't think of any.

I could be incorrect, but didn't Evrett Edwards have to sit out the Liberty Bowl because he had those issues? Don't know specifics but I thought he might've not gone to class really at all and didn't turn anything in because he was a grad transfer. Which is ironic because I think he was an incredibly bright kid who'd graduated from Duke.

Online classes aren't new, and it's pretty simple to prove integrity in the same way you do for in-person classes, you have a proctor for exams.

At least that's how it worked 20 years ago when I took an online class the summer before I was on campus in Ames (Somehow I had forgotten geometry, but remembered trigonometry so I had to take geometry at ISU in order to start with Calc 2 when I got on campus).

Reminds me:
Shopping at Venetian. Girl at some purse store goes, you all travel thick. My brother used to play at ISU.
I asked who it was. She said her brother is Everett Edwards "the flag guy."

In case you forgot:

It all depends on the assessment strategies and assignments for online classes. It's not that difficult to provide some level of forcing people to "attend" class in order to turn in assignments.

That's a good point. I know that we've had at least one football player who barely squeaked past an F in an in-person class I taught, but he saw substantial playing time every year. I'm pretty sure stuff happens behind the scenes that massages people along.

I can tell you 1 thing I had a history class with Darren Davis and there is no way in hell he passed that class without some kind of help. Several of us that showed up every class and took notes went into the final worried about passing the class. I'm pretty sure I went into the final with a D and had I not spent a ton of time studying for the final with some groups that were in the same boat as me it probably was the hardest earned C+ I got in college. Darren and some other FB player would usually show up about 10 minutes late, sit in the upper deck of the auditorium and take a nap and never take out a pen and paper to take notes. Same semester Cael Sanderson was in this same class with us and he showed up and took notes like any other student would.

Had a friend a few years older than me going to ISU when I was in HS and he had a class with Kelvin Cato and told me he seriously wondered if Kelvin knew how to read with some of the things he observed. Not trying to throw some of our former players under the bus here but I'm sure anyone that had a class with certain athletes probably has some interesting stories like this to share. Freshman year I lived on a floor with a bunch of guys that were on the track team and most of them probably had better study habits than I did. One funny thing is we got a new math teacher in HS my junior year and he was a horrible teacher but bragged all the time about how he tutored the ISU men's BB team. Well funny thing is he would have been doing that about the same time we had some guys not make grades 1 semester (I think Pratt and 1 or 2 others maybe?) so we found that funny he was proud of that job because we all thought he was an idiot.

I'm sure you already know this but some may not.... Darren posted the worst Wonderlic score in NFL history - equaled only by Morris Claiborne who was later diagnosed with a learning disability.
