What was the talk about him getting skipped? I know I've heard it before. Was it around the divorce and blew over? Like was this a done deal or chance somebody else was king today?
It was due to him already being pretty old. He is 70 and the thought would be that it would be better for the nation to skip Charles and go right to William.

He’s going with Charles III as that is what PM Truss called him.
I saw a bbc reporter say that might not be the case because his statement just refers to him as “the king.” It’s possible the British PM assumed wrongly

Edit: BBC is now reporting he will be known as King Charles III

wouldnt it be in the royal family best interest to make william king (young cute family etc).... who the f wants charles and his mistress?

Sounds like about 50% of all people who ascended to the throne in England.

Yes. He is unpopular for a variety of reasons, not least the divorce from Diana and her death making her way more popular. People generally like William a lot, seems like he gets gma's "duty first" while still appearing to be a decent person with a pretty wife and cute kids. So there was some thought (hope?) that Charles would either die or pre-retire and the throne would bypass him straight to William. I suppose it still might- Charles could be King for a short term and then retire early - sort of like what Benedict did with the Papacy.

It’s the UK. The PM derives authority from the monarchy. It wasn’t an accident.

Real missed opportunity to be Campbell I, IMO...

So is Prince Charles King now or is he getting skipped?

I say go right to one of those little kids so they can beat great grandma's 70 year run.

He became King immediately after her death. The official crowning ceremony comes later.

I follow UK politics quite a bit but not monarchy as much.

I did notice a few years back that Prince William looked about 25 years old then one day it's like he looks like a 50 year old overnight. That rapid hair loss is a great equalizer even for the most rich and powerful. Glad he made the right decision to just go with it though.

I’m going to London next week. If she croaks I’m afraid it’ll ruin my trip. I’d imagine there would be a lot more people out and about.
Wow, the nerve of the queen to "croak" and mess up your trip. Your grief must be overwhelming.

She was on the throne for decades before I was born. Say what you want to about The Crown, but it really gave me some perspective on how much pressure she was under when she took the throne. She is been nothing but class. You can be against the monarchy but still appreciate what she has meant to generations of people in the UK.

She took the throne six months after Ike became president.

She reigned during the presidencies of...

Eisenhower
Kennedy
Johnson
Nixon
Ford
Carter
Reagan
H.W. Bush
Clinton
W. Bush
Obama
Trump
Biden

She was about 18 months older than my grandmother, who bless her is still alive.

If only 1% of us could have such a life.

She was 96. There was always that risk but yes I care more about my trip than I do about a queen that I have no obsession or personal connection.
