Could Iowa State go bowling at 5-7?

McMurphy now projecting that seven 5-7 teams will be needed to fill all the bowls (the most all time). Given Iowa State's APR position, it seems likely we would get an invite somewhere if can manage to win two more games.

For kicks, here are the bowls and opponents that McMurphy projects 5-7 teams will be pulled in to fill:

*Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth vs Houston
*Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa vs UAB
*Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit vs the MAC champion (projected as Ohio)
*Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix vs Purdue
*Birmingham Bowl - both teams 5-7 (possible Cy-Hawk rematch not out of the question)
*My personal favorite, either the San Francisco Bowl or - if it is not played - a TBD Bowl that ESPN will create just for the hell of it, vs Louisiana

I would guess that would mean college football is generally having a down year.

Is that the result of the transfer portal?

I don’t know if it would be more embarrassing to miss a bowl or to make one with only 5 wins. Either way, nobody should want an Iowa matchup. That game earned its El Assico name this year and the last thing we need is El Assico Dos.

Literally nobody wants to see that rematch except like CFer Tornado Man.

The Frisco Bowl is in Frisco, TX - which I plan on atending no matter who plays, so that is my number one choice! I would also like them in the Birmingham Bowl (my home town and where I first saw the Cyclones in the 1978 Hall of Fame Classic) or the Detroit Bowl (easy drive and indoors in a cool location). Maybe the Red Wings are in town at that time? Need to check the schedule.

I actually think it would be really funny for 5-7 Iowa to face 5-7 Iowa State in a minor bowl in Alabama that kicks off at 2:15 PM CT on a non-holiday Tuesday.

If it happens, stay at the Tutwiler downtown, go to Dave's for beer before going to Chez FonFon for dinner in Five Points. All in walking distance / shuttle distance from the stadium. You can thank me later.

The pool of potential APR bowl teams above/equal to ISU is down to 9.

Northwestern (1-7)
Air Force (5-3)
Rice (4-4)
Wisconsin (4-4)
Louisville (5-3)
Minnesota (5-3)
Temple (2-6)
Boston College (2-6)
Iowa State (3-5)

Is anyone convinced they will actually win 2 more games?
This is where I am at.

I have a really hard time seeing us play clean enough football to finish better than 4-8. Cross the OK St and TCU games off (they are a lot better than us).

I just don’t think this team can play 8 quarters well enough at home to beat WVU and TTU.

I guess its fun to speculate but I do not see this team getting to 5 wins with whats left on the schedule and what the offense is producing.

I really want to see the team make a bowl game. I'd be more optimistic if we ran the Texas approach on offense against the Sooners. I suppose we will see what happens down the stretch.

All of a sudden @ Oklahoma State looks like a possible win.
A lot of injuries on Saturday. Multiple starters out on both sides of the ball. Think similar to when we played K-State in 2020.

My guess is they round into shape and get healthy just in time for us. That's another thing about this year, although uncontrollable, has not been in our favor.

Missed playing Texas when Ewers was out for multiple weeks
Missed playing OU when Gabriel was out for a couple weeks
Missed playing KU when Daniels was out (got hurt the following week and out for season I believe)

And that's just QB, I'm not sure about other positions. Contrast that to TCU, who I believe has faced the backup QB for OU, Kansas, a banged-up Spencer Sanders, and 2nd and 3rd string QBs for K-Sate. TCU is getting all the breaks, and we are getting none.

Yeah, really not sure I'd tune in for El Assico Dos. I love the 'clones, but I can't put myself thru that again.

Saturday could very well tell us one way or the other. Lose and you're right, we aren't getting to 5 wins. Win and I think a plausible case could be made that any of the remaining games are still winnable. I for one am nervous as hell for West Virginia. They have the MO of a couple teams that have beaten us. Bad, bad, bad on defense like KU and OU, but similarly capable on offense. The Cyclones need to finally take advantage of a porous defense.
