At this point I'd be delighted to see some fresh approaches on the offense side of the ball that last more than a game and a 5-7 finish with or without a bowl. The turning point has to start somewhere.Real answer is who cares?
There are too many bowls and too many underserving teams that go to them. A 5-7 team should NEVER be going to a bowl. Ever. This team hasn't earned the right to play beyond their last scheduled game.
That game was so ugly…Let’s do it. This isn’t all that different from 2012 when 9 of 10 schools in the league made a bowl game. Kansas was the odd man out and we lost to Tulsa in the Liberty Bowl.
It will be quite an achievement in our third rebuilding since 2016 according to CMC.Please…just say “no.” Of course getting to 5-7 will take a bit of a miracle at this point.
I'd be OK with any of those. Even going against a Group-of-5 school COULD be good, possibly a chance to beat a school that has only faced bad competition.McMurphy now projecting that seven 5-7 teams will be needed to fill all the bowls (the most all time). Given Iowa State's APR position, it seems likely we would get an invite somewhere if can manage to win two more games.
For kicks, here are the bowls and opponents that McMurphy projects 5-7 teams will be pulled in to fill:
*Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth vs Houston
*Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa vs UAB
*Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit vs the MAC champion (projected as Ohio)
*Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix vs Purdue
*Birmingham Bowl - both teams 5-7 (possible Cy-Hawk rematch not out of the question)
*My personal favorite, either the San Francisco Bowl or - if it is not played - a TBD Bowl that ESPN will create just for the hell of it, vs Louisiana
