My thoughts on why we won game:
* Defense is still solid
* 0 turnovers
* Special teams didn't have any critical mistakes
* Running game wasn't terrible
* Officiating wasn't terrible

Offense certainly still has a lot of room for improvement, but I thought this game showed that we can win a lot of games by not "losing them" because of the defense.
Yuppp. This is it right here. We’re not good enough to overcome mistakes to win and we avoided the big ones yesterday that have plagued and defined us this year.

  • Dear Iowa State ST: when Jaylin Noel lets 6 plus punts over the course of the year fly over his head and choosing not to fair catch, causing us to start drives inside our 10 yard line, it is time to find someone else. This is an outrage.
You are correct!

After watching highlights again, offense had better playcalling.

And the backs looked like they knew what to do.

Loved the option plays.

Norton could be special.

Defense deserves so much more credit than even we can give them. Incredible team play and execution.
they weren't so predictable. Got Deckers on the move in the passing game, did more outside runs, ran some options, misdirection, etc... So refreshing. If they would have done these things in the other games instead of just inside runs and pocket passing plays, we would certainly have a lot more wins. And having Norton healthy is huge. I felt he was rusty in the first half, which is completely understandable, but once the rust wore off, oh man, he showed a lot and I think he has more upside on top of that.

Glad that you mentioned officiating. It was pretty good and should be mentioned as that has been a big problem in some of our past games. A little iffy on the PI call but overall very good.

Crowd also cheered when we converted 4 and1 behind center QB sneak with what seemed a push from behind. Even the ESPN announcer was like that is basically impossible to stop.
About time! I’m so sick of the slow shotgun runs on short yardage, they got blown up every time.

The O line was better by a little, but still not good. Once WV gave up late in the game they had success.

On Noel (not) returning punts. Yes it was frustrating to watch, to be sure. Seemed to me he was consistently lined up 5 or 10 yards to close to the LoS. Causing almost every punt to go over his head. But the "go stand on the X yard line" isnt on him, right? Some coach does the math. Seemed to me like the punter either crushed his avg all day or they just screwed up the math. Idk what really is the deal, but it def sucked.

Amen. Made me really worry about losing some of these guys next year. Stepped up my We Will donation but still concerned about losing some of these guys that could give next year some real potential…

I would be curious what @brentblum thinks is truly needed to keep our key guys for next year. I know Brent and Chris have talked about how important the next 2 months will be but I’m wondering if we are even in the ballpark of what we think is needed to at least try and compete with what they’ll most certainly get elsewhere.

Like many already mentioned, I was baffled by Noel not fielding some of those punts.

Then I took a look at the flags on top of the stadium…..now mind you I am far from being a JTS newb, but I swear those flags were pointed in at least three different directions…at the same time. It was unlike anything I had ever seen in a game there before.

Given that, the other factors, and the fact we won, to me, Jaylin gets a pass.

Offense

  • Hunter D. was just smooth all day long. 2 td's no picks 67% completion. His game gets instantly elevated with the threat of a run game.
  • Speaking of which, I thought Norton was tough and especially strong in the red zone. He needs to be our inside the 10 RB rest of the year, even if Brock gets healthier. He is stronger I feel than our other backs and has enough wiggle in him.
  • Deon Silas: tip of the cap to this guy, he busted a big one of 38. We need a running back to get a chunk gain once per game, it opens up the entire offense.
  • OL: they were mostly servicable today in pass protection, and hungry at times in the run. Hufford, Miller, Simmons and Downing all opened up holes. I feel like Jake Remsberg is still getting his sea legs after missing so much time.
  • Hutchinson: find me a better WR in america right now, guy deserves the Blitnikoff.
  • I also liked to see Darren Wilson get an important third down catch, Hannika had another TD as our go to TE, Easton Dean is finally starting to make plays. This offense just seemed to find some confidence finally (albeit against a crap team)
  • Negatives: not many. I will say Jaylin Noel is staring to make it routine to disappear in some games, he had a nice reverse but like 2 drops today and one where he wanted to avoid contact. I'm starting to get less and less bullish on him if I am being honest.

Defense
  • Will McDonald played his ass off today, .5 sack but many disruptive plays. MJ Anderson had a great sack, he can be the centerpiece of this defense next year, just a relentless player love his motor.
  • Anthony Johnson with another pick, he continues to move up draft boards as a flex safety as an nfl prospect
  • TJ Tampa - nobody can outrun this guy, nobody. What a player.
  • LBs I feel McClaughlin is always in the right spot (although he shared time with Reeder today). Reeder was solid today and made some key tackles
  • We lose Will and Isiah Lee but I feel this defense can be very, very good yet again next year. Dominique Orange is a behemoth of a man.

This is an outrage. I do not get why he is above benching. He never gets a solid return at punt return (today he even almost botched a kick return bumping into someone), his play in my eyes should force PR to go to Myles Purchase, Stanley, or good God anyone else. I can't watch anymore and it is confusing they continue to let this happen. This some games will cost us 25 yards plus.
Regarding your comments about Jaylin Noel, have you ever tried to return a low line drive rugby style punt when you're starring straight into a low hanging November sun? A fumbled punt deep in our own territory could have changed the game entirely.

If you insist on blaming someone for our constantly horrible starting field position, you'd be better off blaming our coaching for not choosing to have 2 returners back to field the punts.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned but we almost had 2 punts blocked. The roughing the punter on the second one was the turning point in the game. I wish we did more unpredictable things on offense like that run heavy formation and throw it to X when we were on the 3 or the Noel reverse. I also liked the speed option looks. Maybe this game can be like Iowa's northwestern where we get confidence and roll next week too but I am not counting on it.

On the post game show, He Who Shall Not Be Named said the knuckleball nature of the kicks, wind, and sun on the one end were all factors. He indicated they were all on the same end and that coaches prefer if he has doubt that he can catch it clean that he let it go.

Duh!
Where I’m frustrated too is that he also had two drops as a receiver. To me he’s on a worse trajectory than where tarique Milton was as a soph, and he’s not even close to deshaunte jones as clonerjams said
Was the one in the south endzone tipped? I couldn’t tell live or on the big screen.

One was right in front of me and I thought they got it. Definitely coming after the punter and it was affecting punts, because he was booming them in warmups. Other teams will continue to pressure him, not sure what the solution is.

I thought it was a clean drop too until I saw the broadcast. Defender absolutely got a fingertip on it. Whitver mentioned on the postgame show how difficult those really are to haul in and I’ll give him a break there. Largely I think we just wanted to see a much larger step forward from him this year, fair or not. Our expectations likely just got away from us a bit.

First of all on punts, glad to see us try to block the punt on a few because our standard play is for 90% of the team to stand in place neither attempting to block the punt nor attempting to block any defenders going down field to tackle or returning. More than not, it's the returner catching the ball with 5 defenders standing around waiting for him to muff it. I agree that someone else should be given the chance, but whoever is back there is not set up for success due to the scheme or lack thereof. We don't even chip the gunners.
