Hy-Vee's weirdest business decision yet?

Don't get your hopes high. The owners are too scared that they're going to loose money by people not scanning certain items.

I had a buddy at work who previously worked at Menards (got fired because he was looking for another job and they found out). Anyway, one of the things he told me was that if you worked at Menards, you were not allowed to build your own home, because the owners feared that their employees would steal from the store. So technically, you had to buy an already existing home.

As much as their building materials selection is great, in addition to their yard, working for that company sounds just horrible based on my buddy. It got to the point I would try and avoid it if I could.

I have a buddy who's worked at the Menards distribution center in Shelby for ~10 years now who just built a house a couple years ago, no issues. When I worked at the Clive store part time ~8 years ago I had a manager who was in the process of building, also no issues.

There are plenty of things they could improve on, but overall I enjoyed working there, much better than a lot of the alternatives, anyway.

I'm really hoping that the Amazon technology quickly takes off. Don't even need to scan, just put it in your cart and your done! I think there are some other companies outside of Amazon that are developing this technology as well.

Then when you're done you get a receipt saying how much time you spent in the store. Really amazing stuff. Grab and get on out.

My only complaint was the stuff actually in the store, but the technology is nuts.

I may quit using Hy Vee self-checkout for the sole reason they make you actually press the "Card" button on payment options. Every single time I hit "checkout", swipe my card and stand there like a dummy trying to figure out why it's not doing anything.

When I was working in retail type jobs 10-15 years ago, the training I got was just following someone around who told me what to do. First real job was at the Q Center in food services; training was just following someone to watch. In College, I worked at Menards and Lowes. Menards was same as before. Lowes actually had a computer training that I had to complete before going on to the floor. But after that, it was just following someone around.

So do retail companies really train their employees anymore? Just seems like they hire someone and send them straight to the floor.

This was 16 years ago (God, that's depressing) but the store I worked at just opened up so I guess they kind of had to do training as there was nobody to follow around and watch.

#1 If you use the same hy-vee all the time, you can set the volume. Then before you scan any items, scan your card, and the volume will be at the level you previous set it to.

#2 Hy-Vee IT is now in such a bad place that previous companies that they used for contracting EE's are now refusing to work with Hy-Vee in the DSM metro. This is going to be a real **** show.

But HyVee built that fancy new IT building, it was like silicon valley in Iowa! But yes, all of the people I knew that went there left within 6 months.

That and having to keep the groceries in the bagging area until you’re completely done checking out is annoying as ****.

The self check outs with the conveyor belt works nice. But the don’t seem to be open often.

Have you been to an Aldi before? Each one I've been to has 4 or 5 lanes, 1 will be open. And 15 people in line.

Sure they move fast, but their checkout is what keeps me from going there more often.

I'm not sure how it works from a loss/prevention standpoint, but I absolutely LOVE the Sams thing. Scan as you put the items in the cart, and walk out of the store like a boss. Admittedly I have not tried HyVee's thing.

Yeah, I buy around 90% of my groceries there. Can get in and out of there so fast, is a big plus. Much prefer a human scanner/cashier. I pay cash, and hate using the lousy bill taking machines.

Saw one of those HyVee cops at the East HyVee in Ames and that dude has no chance at stopping a determined shoplifter. I worked in a grocery store for years and I know for a fact that guy isn't putting any fear in potential shoplifters.

Lots of retail pharmacies provide that service, it's really not uncommon.

I shopped for groceries today, unfortunately it’s not a one stop shop for me. I went to Sams Club, Aldi, and Wheatsfield.

Until they start to sell but plug urns, Hy-Vee really can't be considered a one-stop shop.

Aldi and Sams for the win. Aldi's compact layout allows you to fill a cart and be out the door in 15 minutes, while Sam's app scanning and payment option often allows for the same. Never understood the love for Costco as the stores and checkout were often fiascos.

The whole brand vibe Hy Vee has established is just so weird. Their ad campaign's core message is basically "hey look at us we're an Iowa company that has enough money to pay Drew Barrymore and Pat Mahomes and Travis Kelce to appear in our commercials" and that's basically it. It's just really, really bad.

I saw this ad again a couple of times over the weekend. The idea of a store brand Patrick Mahomes Crunch is so stupid it makes me not want to go to Hy-Vee. I can see why their prices are so high. Just like their brand managers.

I don’t think the cereal is a bad thing. They partnered the Mahomes charity foundation on it and they money raised from it goes to his charity.

I don't like Walmart but Sams is closer to my house and it saves me a ton of time. IMO, I also think a lot of their products are better (Kirkland items...like TP and cleaning wipes have really degraded in quality).

The only thing that gets me to go to Costco anymore is their peanut butter. Hands down the best pb I've ever had. I can stomach the hassle for a few times a year.
