Creighton wins again. This time over #9 Arkansas.

And, 5-0 Cats advance to Cayman finals with OT win over Alford's Nevada team. LSU next up tonight. And you can find it on FloHoops, well, don't bother. It's expensive, but awful. LSU favored by one.

I'd love to see the B12 tournament in December, rather than after the season when the winner gets a token trophy to the regular season champions. A pre-season tourney would jump start the season and be a ratings hit.
What year did they stop playing the Big 8 preseason Tournament? Always liked that they played a relevant opponent.

1. The offense he's running at Creighton is much more up-tempo than in Ames. It was brutal high arc weaves left and right.
2. He recruited too many MVC caliber players to Ames.
3. He was left with a good roster when he started at Creighton and Doug was a generational player that really helped them transition for MVC to BE and get eyeballs on them. He's recruited well since then and also coached well. Creighton has a really good NIL program now.

He's like Prohm IMO, the job was just a little much for them both, but they represented ISU well, and I'm wishing them both well at their schools.
I said at the end of last season/beginning of this one I think they are a Final Four caliber team.
I feel like if Steve makes better assistant hires he can be a P5 coach again, just not in the best league in the country. Doubt he ever becomes a great X's and O's coach, but he knows guards and isn't a bad recruiter. With assistants that could develop bigs and build culture I could see him in the SEC or ACC some day.

It's obviously Texas, BU, and KU at the top. Tech is safely #4. 5-8, no one knows. OSU 9 and OU 10 so far.

Houston will become a top tier program next year. I assume BYU is in the 5-8 type tier and Cincy and UCF are bottom feeders for basketball?

1978 was the last year for the preseason/holiday tournament.

The Big 8 Holiday Tournament, which was known as the Big 6 Holiday Tournament in its first year, and as the Big 7 Holiday Tournament from 1947-1957 in keeping with the change in the conference name, was an in-season tournament held in Kansas City, Missouri every year between Christmas and the new year. Municipal Auditorium hosted the event through 1973, after which time it moved to Kemper Arena. The tournament had an eight-team field, with full consolation rounds so that each team played three games. From 1958 until the tournament's demise, that field consisted of the eight members of the Big 8 Conference. Prior to that, the eighth place in the field was taken by an invited school; in the tournament's first year, before Colorado joined the league, two schools were invited. That year was the only year in which one of the invited teams won the tournament, as Southern Methodist captured the title.

The tournament was a highlight of the season, and immediately preceded the beginning of conference play (the games, for the record, were deemed non-conference games). It was still a hugely successful draw when the conference made the decision to cancel the event following the 1978 edition. The only reason for its cancellation was a simple one: three years prior, the conference had begun holding a post-season tournament to determine its automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, and the schools felt that having two tournaments with the same invitees each year -- especially at the same site -- was just a bit much. Interestingly, with the departure of several Big 8 schools from the Big 12 in 2011-12, the idea of bringing the tournament back with the classic lineup has been raised.

Neither Colorado nor Oklahoma State ever captured the Holiday Tournament title.

TxT is 4-2 after losing to Creighton and Ohio State.

I can't talk football here for risk of being banned, so just to get some league chatter started and without a lot of data, here's a shot a ranking the conference today.

1. Texas - what they did to the Zags was scary
2. Baylor - I know, but one loss doesn't matter this early/just beat UCLA
3. Ku - smallish for Self

4. TxT - based only on history
5. ISU - good start
6. TCU - early injuries
7. WVU - new pieces, old story

8. K-State - better than last
9. oSu - all show, no blow
10. OU - never understood the hire
Pretty sure we jumped a tier.

Great win for ISU over NC. Bad day for the Heals (aptly named) as football lost to NC State as well.

We learn a little each game in hoops. But it seems to me we know just enough to be more often than not wrong in our judgments this early. Certainly, Ku and TCU don't look up to their hype, while our land granters are exceeding expectations. Let it continue.
