I mean you said guys may have played longer because they got rolled. Those two played latest.

Did you watch the game? There wasn’t ironing out going on with Jaz and Gabe then.

Ultimately it’s not a big deal, not sure why you’re making it a hill to die on. I’m not.

Yeah but I don't know any more than most and it's just an idea. Maybe they've had things to work on so more time before a week off was needed for all sorts of reasons.

So you didn't see him almost lose control of the ball just dribbling it?

Per his stroke: I'm not sure he gets that shot off in a normal game situation. That's not exactly a quick release.

I can see putting him at the 4 minute mark or something but with how this team goes in to lulls, him just getting a bunch of time doesn't make sense.

Hopefully the next two are bigger blow outs so he does get more time.

People are acting like he's the missing link to something bigger for ISU and it's weird.
Don’t hate da playa hate da game.

As Amish legend has it. The Elders had a unique way to train the youngsters how to shoot the 3. They took bbs from their red Ryder guns and had the youngsters crack hickory shells. From 50 paces the young lads would shoot the bbs into the shell. Form was not emphasized. Results were rewarded. The Legend of the Amish Assassin was born.

Matt Thomas was a top 50 national recruit. Eli King was a 3 star #150.
Both 6’3 and 185 pounds, combo guards. I’d actually give the edge in athleticism to King given his football prowess. I don’t really care about recruit rankings, but I thought people expected Eli King’s to improve after his senior year - then nothing moved.

My thought is, Gabe and Caleb are inconsistent, sometimes in the same game. When they’re bad, they’re really bad - see Iowa. Giving King five minutes at the expense of Grill isn’t likely to hurt anything!

I trust the coaches. Eli is probably behind on his ball handling and defense. When I said Eli looks to be our best shooter by far, I based that on his reputation coming in and the fairly dismal 3 FG% of our other players. No one is shooting better than 31% from 3 except for Holmes (38%) and Kunc (36%). Hopefully those 2 can keep it up, but last year Holmes shot 27% from deep.

I probably spoke to soon about Eli King being far better than Kunc who shot a career best 39% from deep last year after shooting 34% and 30% in the previous seasons. Without Eli getting more playing time or someone else emerging, Kunc is our only consistent 3 point threat and he doesn't take nearly as many attempts as Grill and Kalscheur. That's why I wouldn't be surprised to see Eli earn more playing time as the season goes on.

Grill and Kalscheur typically shoot 1-7 on their threes in a given game with 2-3 games sprinkled in where they get hot. Their mechanics aren't consistent. Often times they are leaning one way or the other when they shoot it. The sample size is limited but Eli's mechanics appear rock solid.

I see you’re not a fan of defense. Also stars matter in basketball.

what is his reputation coming in? Was he really that prolific of a shooter at Caldonia?

16 games played he was 3-18 from 3 his senior year. 16.7%

Eli King isn't a great 3 point shooter. Guy makes his living in the paint (In High School).

All that said, I think he deserves some minutes in blow out games, but he isn't going to save this season as Iowa State's best shooter.

Definitely don't take those statistics at face value. They don't make sense. Eli King definitely averaged more than 4 FGA a game and 1 three a game, and the made shots don't correctly add up to the total number of points.

But I do agree with your general conclusion. I think a lot of people just assigned him a shooter label because he's a white shooting guard. I think he probably is or can be a good shooter, but not sure why some assume that he would be the best on the team if he started getting minutes.

It definitely isn't perfect. (Only recording some of the games, not all of them). He averaged 22 points a game which is great. But even if it is just a 3 game stretch that is recorded, going 3 for 18 from 3 in that 3 game stretch is not good (does not look good for consistency there either).

I have a lot of faith that he can be a contributor. He just isn't going to be Devin Booker coming in here draining 3s on everyone.

King was hurt a lot of his senior year correct? I think that hurt ranking and development more than anything.

He was out all of junior year with knee surgery after football state championship. Played senior year basketball coming off of recovery—- skipping football senior year where Caledonia’s 71 game winning streak was broken. Interesting side note— it was announced that Caledonia’s boys Basket and football had the best record In the state of Minnesota all divisions over the last ten years. Say what you will the kid is used to winning and excellence. In the sectional finals last year Caledonia’s team was down by 7 points with 14 seconds to go. Eli scored 7 points in 11 seconds to force overtime’s with them winning and advancing to state. These are things legends are made of—- and there’s more! Cyclones should tap into it!

That is a ludacrous thing to say. Gabe still has it coming for his haters this year, just wait and see.

Super concerning for ISU if it's true he was a post player in high school. Those small level high school 'bigs' don't usually pan out at the power 5 level. Super concerning if he can't shoot. People love to rag on Caleb and especially Gabe for poor shooting, well guess what, the next man in probably is worse.
