Great game by the guys seems like Baylors length bothered them for about the 1st 10 minutes then they started to figure it out. Heck of a start to the 2nd half I don't think I've ever seen a TJ team hit that many consecutive shots. We look better when Lipsey is running point but everyone stepped up their game and brought home a great W to start the season.

It was a great day with a Cyclone sweep the men got Baylor and the women took care of TT. Can't ask for a better conference start than that. Happy New Year to all Cyclones and our other lurkers.

Gabe naysayers who never laced up can be quiet now.
Love GK. I'll take that guy on my team any day of the week.

I've been watching college hoops for 40+ years, and have to say Gabe's one of the best defenders I've ever seen in the college game, no lie.

I know he can be inconsistent scoring, but his "D" is a thing of beauty.

GK reminds me a lot of Chris Babb. Elite defense, but inconsistent offense.

His PER is last on the team among players that actually play and he is 3rd to last on the team in BPM. Analytics can tell a better story than the eye test. Analytics don’t have preconceived biases.
PER isn't really a statistic that most analytics people use anymore, and most of those same people would say that publicly available defensive statistics still shouldn't be taken as the absolute truth.

That all being said, he has had 4 straight games with a positive BPM per Barttorvik and he currently has the second highest offensive rating and true shooting percentage of his career (both behind his freshman season), has cut his turnover percentage a bunch from last year, and has his best steal percentage and assist percentage. Chances are he's still going to have some really bad games, but he's been much better this season than last season overall, and the analytics do show that.

Haven't read the entire thread, but being at the game.............Tre King makes a HUGE difference. Maybe his stat line doesn't jump out.....but having that type of player against the Baylor's of the world really helps Kunc or no Kunc.

Only critique I have......and it's a small one, but unless he is just playing out of his mind.....need to find just spot minutes for big energy. It isn't just him and George this year......there is depth down low. Sometimes he seems a fish out of water against this type of competition. Osun, Tre, Hassan and even Watson matched up very well against the Baylor bigs. Not ragging just my thoughts after seeing the game.

Also.......wife and I were busting a gut after that last three went down watching how fast people were out of their seats and on their way to the parking lot olympics. Never change Hilton.
When Rob tries to do too much you get what you got today. When he slows down and let the game come to him he actually does some nice things. Funny enough he played pretty darn well for the last quarter of the game. Him Ward and Osun compliment one another well too which I love.

I would take Rob on my team every day of the week and twice on Sunday. No, he’s not that talented, but **** the guy plays incredibly hard and is a great backup 5. Also, if Osun continues to play well, Rob’s minutes will shrink a tad which will be a positive overall.

When watching this game I could only think how happy I was that the Omaha game was cancelled. The team looked fresh and well rested while Baylor appeared tired from their games in the last week.

For some reason, I followed the game thread for 6 or 7 pages before having a family thing. Just watched the recording and enjoyed. Fun to go back and read those early posts now!

Only saw highlights but it looked like Osun was more honed in without any post-basket flexes etc.

Rob like you said is at his best if he just slows down a bit. There's a couple of others that are similar in they get too hurried.

I think people have to get this idea out of their heads that Gabe’s only good games are when he shoots the 3 well. Those are his great games. He is taking it to the basket more this year and always plays some of the best defense in the Big 12.
I could be wrong, but it seems like Gabe was on their freshman stud in the first half, and then on Flagler in the second half (keeping the former in check, and then stopping the hot streak the latter had been on).

Thanks for this.

Analytics and sabremetrics or whatever the hell they are called can be fun to look at, but they don't tell the whole story. GK was one of the best players on the floor yesterday, and we wouldn't have won without him. Sometimes it's just that simple.
