I think he is an excellent defender but his numbers from last year were partially due to our system. His number of steal is way down compared to last year. Lipsey has almost 3 times more steals than Hunter this year.
Steals aren’t the only measure of defense. Hunter is an incredible athlete and excellent defender. Better than Lipsey. However, I do feel like Lipsey fits this team better and he has been extremely impressive this year.

I agree that steal is not the only measure of defense and Hunter is an excellent defensIve player. However, he definitely benefited from our defensive system last year.

I always thought I was crazy because nobody here brought it up but Hunter got his shot blocked A LOT. Like a crazy amount in my opinion (no stats to back it up).

Lipsey definitely picks better shots when he drives to the basket.
You are correct. He did get a ton of shots blocked.
We have improved from getting blocked on 11.5% of our possessions last season(334th in Kenpom) to 4.3% this season(2nd in Kenpom). This is the single biggest improvement we have made on Offense.

If you take away his one fluky game vs Gonzaga, he’s shooting like 25% from 3 and averaging 9 ppg. Texas bought a guy who is a good defender (statistically down from last year but still good) but can’t shoot most nights. Did they think he would magically be a knock down shooter if they gave him a bunch of money? Makes you wonder what the thought process was.

We can’t take away his game against Gonzaga.

Hunter’s departure & the knee injury to the PG recruit brought in to replace him, forced Otz to make Lipsey the starting PG. Turns out for the best, Lipsey is a physically stouter Monte Morris perhaps. Turns out that Hunter’s transfer was a non-event. As it is said, everybody’s replaceable.

I wouldn't say losing Williams was for the best. Didn't ruin the season but for the best is a stretch.

The thought process of Texas is throw money at everything and everyone to fix your problems. When that fails spend more

Texas's thought process is to acquire the most talent possible and coach them down to mediocre and underperforming levels.

Works like a charm in both football and basketball.
