Izzo said straight up that ISU was the best team that MSU played that year. That game was the defacto National Championship and it took home cooking in f^cking Auburn Hills, Michigan to beat us.

Interesting bit of trivia that I just saw while looking up some stats. Due to losing 2 of their first 5 games (Drake, Cincy) that 1999-2000 team did not crack the AP top 25 until January 31st when they entered the polls at #20.

I recall it taking quite a while to get ranked, but didn't know it was THAT far into the season (Without research)

99-00 team lost 5 games...

Stinker vs. Drake when they were trying to figure things out
#1 Cincinnati at tournament in Hawaii
2OT at Oklahoma
OT at Colorado (Fluke 3 by Walls to send it to OT)
at MSU that should have been a Championship game match-up. Final 4 at the very least.
I was at the Drake game and thought the sky was falling.

99-00 team is the benchmark for success right now. Until a team makes the Final 4 this is not even a debate. That Team should have been a #1 seed after winning both regular season and conference tournament championships and instead had to play the eventual national champions just a stones throw away from their campus. We've had some teams with potential since then but none have ever come 3 minutes away from the final 4.

I think the '00-01 team would be ranked 2nd. That team continued where the previous year left off, it's just a shame they fizzled out at the end because they had Elite 8 potential.

Basketball wasn’t fun anymore from what I have heard. I coached a High School basketball coaches son in baseball. He said that the first 45 minutes of practice was conditioning and beating the $hiite out of each other rebounding. He was invited up by Eustachy and he wondered how they had a full roster.

I have heard similar stories. The end of Larry at Iowa State should have been really good. Except rumor had spread that it was brutal to play at Iowa State.

Completely agree. I could be wrong as I often am, but I think MSU was also the top overall number 1 seed. So not only were we not given a 1 seed, but the worst 2 seed. I think if we would have been given just a better 2 seed even in a different region, we would have made the national championship game and maybe beat MSU.
