Dana Holgorsen: "What we're dealing with right now is going to be dead last in the Big 12."
With the 2023 Big 12 schedule now out, Dana Holgorsen bluntly -- but accurately -- laid out everything Houston needs to compete in its bigger, more competitive, more expensive new conference.
Comparing this to the Big 12 schedule is quite interesting.I was curious how the relative schedules ranked based on the 2022 final Sagarin rankings. I averaged the 2022 Sagarin ranking for each team on a school's schedule. This is how the schedules stacked up. (The average ranking for all of the current teams from 2022 was 36.7. The range of possibilities would have been 25.2 to 49.3)
1Houston 30.1 2ISU 31.1 3BYU 32.7 4TCU 33.8 5KU 34.3 6Bay 34.4 7TEX 34.7 8KSU 36.1 9UCF 37.4 10TT 38.0 11WV 38.7 12OU 41.1 13OSU 45.3 14CIN 46.2
It is interesting that OSU has the bottom 7 teams from the 2022 season. ISU and Houston play 6 of the top 7.
OSU replacing OuT as top banana. I wonder if the southern teams drew straws? It is interesting that OSU has the bottom 7 teams from the 2022 season. ISU and Houston play 6 of the top 7.
I’ve been rooting for cougars since I was twenty. The big 12 will be rooting for cougars that day.
Sorry - was thinking we played at Norman this year but it was in Ames. How's that?
oklahoma state has a pretty easy schedule, no?
no tcu, baylor, or texas
I absolutely loved the 10 team format, but it put us at a big disadvantage with every other league being able to have schools avoid good teams and get more wins than they would have if they had to play the good in conference schools every year. This makes me already miss the 10 team/round robin situation.

Say in 2020 we didn’t have OSU on the schedule, do we go undefeated in Big12 play? Or if Covid never happened and the Ragin Cajuns weren’t on the schedule either?
Again 10 team league is perfect, but the other conferences need to be at that number too, but there’s no going back.
Yes and no. The B1G and SEC made out like bandits and are rich now. ACC locked in a long term bad deal, and the PAC is just in a bad time zone with less fan support as well. Then the Big12 just beat up on each other and didn’t get any respect because someone had to lose when two good teams played, which happened a lot on most of the schedules.Yeah that all makes sense but from a general year to year entertainment perspective the other conferences missed out.
