Hy-Vee's weirdest business decision yet?

Yeah, bakery/meat/alcohol.
One thing I do very much like about HyVee is that you can tell some of the teens are special needs at the checkout/bagging and honestly my interactions with them have been great. Some of HyVees best employees IMO.
Our HV has a pretty even mix of HS kids and older employees running the checkouts. Usually the kids doing the bagging. They all do a good job and are very courteous. Don't really have any customer service issues, other than all the goddam massive online shopping carts blocking traffic in the aisles.
I think the kids do a pretty good job of greeting me and asking if I need any help. I'm not sure if it makes a difference that I shop at the small town Hy-Vees.
I also find it funny that after the gift that was Covid to grocery stores, they likely thought their decisions actually caused the gold rush leading them to run full steam, chest fully puffed out, into to costly decisions.
HyVee was all set to build in clear lake and clear lake started pushing infrastructure to the area and then pulled out while that was being done.
One of my favorite stories. I was in a HyVee the Tuesday before Thanksgiving 2 years ago. As you can imagine It was very busy. An old lady (as an aside, old people shopping after work are one of my biggest pet peeves. You are OLD and retired...******* shop in the middle of the day and leave 5:00 to the rest of us.) was looking at the oranges and asked the teenage kid stocking produce what oranges were 'good juicers'. First you are in a HyVee not a Whole Foods. There are basically 1-2 types of oranges period in HyVee, so just ******* pick one. Second, why that old lady thought that a teenager would have a clue is beyond my imagination. Third, why are you bothering with this 2 days before Thanksgiving? Buy a few oranges and hope for the best. The kid was much more polite than he could have been.
What do you do in a tight, low unemployment labor market? Slash benefits of course!

My Hy-Vee 401k was administered by Principal. As a company, Hy-Vee chose what investments were available to me and one of those was the Hy-Vee trust fund or whatever it was called. I was a sucker for a number of years and kept it only because of that option. I ended up just rolling it into an IRA.
As someone that worked Produce as a teenager, I find this hilarious. I knew how to rotate and that's pretty much it. On the other hand, I was great at making **** up so I would have pointed her to the most expensive ones as I read on the sticker that they were from Florida. "Oh we call these ones from central Florida the Juice Bombs! BTW, I love your scarf".

I was working in Seafood/Specialty meats at that time. I'm sad that even with specialty meat and clams in my arsenal, I probably said something lame like "Hey you go to shags on Thursday nights?
To be fair, it was probably my moves on the dance floor that won her over.
I eat breakfast at hyvee almost once a week and I see them in action occasionally.
As for the future, I'm pretty sure they don't think much further than 6 months ahead. They're just as likely to build 100 new market grills or close then all!
Hy-Vee suspends employee discount after it says it found fraud
According to an internal video obtained by KCCI, effective today, employees will no longer receive a 10% discount at the store. The company says it plans to have a new program up and running by mid-April.

Hy-Vee is the largest private employer in the state. Kind of a big deal. Were you hoping news of this wouldn't become public?
