******* old people, the biggest babies there are.

Scan your items, put your card in and leave. It can't get much easier than that.

I would almost pay extra to do self checkout.
I think it really depends on the size of your order, and i think it comes down to bagging more than scanning. After all scanning and bagging *used* to be a 2 person job.

And honestly, the luck you get with the bags doesn't help. Sometimes they can be kind of a pain in the ass to open up, and that might be even harder for older people.

I imagine some people also don't like feeling pressure to move quickly from those behind them. When its a cashier, that's on them not the customer.

I much prefer bagging my own so I can group the items how I want them. I can double bag what I want to. I can paper anything I might want to paper and I never have to take out my AirPods.

Same. In my mind, I feel like at some point people are going to walk by and comment on how great I am at bagging. It makes me sad when my wife doesn't acknowledge the great walls I build, my crushables on top, my cold items together, double bagging, etc. I can't remember some family members name but I'll never forget that 4011 are bananas.

When I worked the hy vee in ames. They sold milk from a local dairy farm that was sold in a glass bottle. The bottle had a $2 deposit. People would use like $20 of their food stamps and dump the milk in the parking lot. They then brought the bottles back in and used the deposit refund to buy cigarettes. they soon did away with allowing the food stamps to be used to pay for the deposit on these. The parking lot smelled like death on hot days.
Remember that well in our store. One time when those using food stamps couldn’t do the deposit, they mooned everyone in the checkout. Fine people they were.

Was in line and the fella couldn't get his card to work. (I'm not up on how this works but he kept saying food stamps)

Mother ****** threw all of the food on the floor and stormed out.

I was just trying to get fried bird for lunch, but I got lunch and a show.

My first time gambling when I was 10 years old at the county fair betting at Heinhold hog races And then going over to the mice races. The police stopped that after one year. The second time was at hY vee when I was 11. Hyvee would give out cards to shoppers on horse races. It gave you your winner and then you had to turn on WOI or WHO at 4:30 or 5:00 and watch the race to see if your horse won. Does anyone remember that? They geared it to kids because they came right after cartoons and hogan’s heroes.

Holy smokes. Forgot about that, but can confirm.
Nothing like watching a comedy about Nazis and WWII followed up by some underage gambling.

Edit: all while completely unsupervised too!

Those were the goddam days

Working as a checker in 2002-2005ish time, the egg cartons were always so faded that I would have to manually type in the UPC on the keyboard. For whatever reason 20 years later, I still know that grade A large eggs are 7545009552.

Instant edit: while not trusting myself, I searched that number on hy-vee website:

Don't forget a coyote trying to dynamite a rabbit and using acme prime before it became Amazon Prime.

I will say watching Looney Toons now....there are a whole lot of suicide references in there.

I try to pick and choose a little, but HBO Max got rid of all the good ones. *******

Yeah, don't waste your time. The crowd here hate everything Hy-Vee, so anything they do remotely controversial is criticized incessantly. I agree there is plenty they do that is dumb/only money motivated, but they're still the best grocery store in Iowa.

On average, they're cleaner and have WAY more selection than any other option in the state. Sure they're slightly more expensive, but not to the degree people here make it seem. It's probably hard to compare, because Fareway doesn't have half the brands Hy-Vee carries. No doubt Fareway is the meat king, though.
Wife was a lifelong HY-Vee cheerleader. She worked at Hy-Vee in high school and even in college as did both of her brothers and her dad after retirement. She was ecstatic when they were opening one near us. She has been nothing but disappointed in where Hy-Vee has gone, the quality, and service.

Not a born Hy-Vee hater but in the last several years she is becoming one.

Feel like Whole Foods/Amazon is there iirc. Not everywhere, but they have the tech in the wild I believe. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
I know of a place that is using the Amazon no check out technology at their new facility and they are just about ready to shut it down. It is great in principle but they are experiencing unacceptable losses and there doesn't seem to be a concrete avenue to solving the problem. This tech might be a lot more solid in five years, but there seems to be a lot of issues with it still.

I guess we had different experiences. I found it faster to just scan everything at the end.
Yeah, our Hy-Vee turned over some of the staffed lines to self check in addition to the self check they initially had. But I was in there at about 9:30 one evening to pick up one thing the wife needed. I was kind of ticked off that they didn't have a single self check operating so I had to wait in line behind a couple of people with full carts for one item since they only had two lines open. I asked why they didn't have any of the dozen self check lines open and they said they didn't have staff available for it. WTF?

They are spending money all over the place. Just because it isn’t to support IT and marketing departments doesn’t mean they are hurting. It’s clear people have some sort of vendetta against them. Likely because of a bad employment experience, but the truth is they continue to be doing quite well. Just because you don’t like how and where they are redirecting their spending doesn’t mean they have cash flow problems.

Okay, Randy.

1) They need at least one person to stand there and watch to make sure people aren’t bagging up unscanned items

2) They also need one or two people available to come help when an item rings up the wrong price (thats happened to me more than once - I wish they still had the “if it scans wrong it’s free” policy) or a coupon doesn‘t scan or the person self-checking needs some other assistance

I don’t mind self-check if I only have a few items but if I have a coupon for anything I’m going through the regular checkout lines. Heck, about 25% of the time the checkout people have problems with HyVee store coupons.

My favorite thing about the west Ames hyvee is that there is no place to put your basket while you scan stuff yourself. and they crammed so many stations in there it's ridiculous. but there are four stations of the pay with the app or whatever that are always empty. always. that's prime real estate that is completely wasted.

I get that. But they converted some of the lanes that are right in front of customer service and they had 2-3 people at any one time in CS that were pretty much doing nothing.

Why cant you put the basket where you bag the items?
