Iowa would have 4-5 if you let them. Might as well toss in IL and Purdon’t. That way, they have a better chance of keeping the tradition of playing as many tomato cans as possible while avoiding blue bloods. Iowa feasts on programs that can’t get their **** together and the B10W has been full of them.
B1G: “What protected rivalries do you want?”

Iowa: writes down entire B1G West

Give them some credit. Indiana, Rutgers, and Maryland are in the West and they certainly requested them

Penn State probably asked for Pitt, then the B1G had to tell them not yet.

Then they asked for West Virginia.

Weird. It is my understanding that you could ask for three, but it had to be mutual. No idea whey Penn St would not request Maryland and Rutgers on their schedule every year. Guess Maryland and Rutgers said, "nah dog, we good".

And vice versa. Iowa has all 3 requests allowed as I am sure Wisky, Nebby and Minny all said hell yes when asked if they wanted Iowa on their schedule every year.

Do any of our "rivalries" really rise to the level of needing to be "protected?" I would like to think that K-State or O-State are rivalries, but I don't think either of them really look at us as a rivalry to be protected.

Our biggest rivalries are with in-state, but out-of-conference teams.

As far as Iowa State goes, KState KU and OSU would be just fine. Assuming they do it right and it’s a 16 team conference and all teams have three protected rivalries. Sure, for some teams it might be new and forced, but it’s the way to go. It’s possible to form new rivalries, not everything has to form in the early 1900’s.

Personally I think only K-State needs to be protected. It's somewhere in the Top 10 for longest continually-played series in all of college football. Every season since 1917.

KU would be nice but I don't view it as a rivalry so much as a school we have history with that we can easily drive to. Oklahoma State is even further down the list for me.

Agree, ISU-KSU would be first to protect, if longtime rivalries mean anything anymore. Of course that matters less and less compared to other factors compared to what it was even a couple of decades ago, but unless there's a reason NOT to keep it continuous, why wouldn't that be a primary element of the scheduling?

I thought there was a 2nd component of the Big10's flex schedule and that was balancing SOS.

So if Iowa's protected rivals are "tomato cans", then there is a higher likelihood they would have Ohio State, Michigan, USC, etc. on their schedule.

There's three obvious "sets" of protected rivalries for the Big 12 --

Iowa State-Kansas-Kansas State-Oklahoma State = old Big Eight
Baylor-Houston-TCU-Texas Tech = Texas foursome
Cincinnati-UCF-WVU = some past history and eastern travel buddies

BYU is the only one where I don't see any obvious rivalries to protect. You could easily put them into that eastern pod, though, for scheduling convenience, and then do this...

Play your own foursome = 3
Play 3/4 of the other two = 3 + 3 (no more than two road games against one foursome)
= 9 conference game

You'd see your foursome rivals every season and the others 75% of the time.

Everybody would be guaranteed a road game in Texas somewhere every season.
I think oSu and TT have something going against each other.

I would have KSU, KU and OSU on the schedule every year. If CU came back, I would prefer KSU, KU and CU. KSU and KU are good measuring sticks to the state of our program, plus ISU (and fans) would save money on travel costs. Besides, with nine conference games, if not KU, just means other locations like BYU and UCF that we will get sent to more often.

Coach prob would not mind Cincy being protected and getting an annual trip to/from one of his prime recruiting grounds.

Does this mean iowa will play more than one team with a winning record? Doubt it.

They should see the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, USC and so on more often at least. Not one every 5 years like it was.

However, because Iowa is the only B1G team with 3 protected rivals, they are going to play Ohio State, Michigan, USC (and all teams not named Neb/Minn/Wisc) less frequently than every other B1G team will face them.
