It took Nebraska two weeks to fire Tim Miles after their last game. He said he knew was being fired for over a month. It was coincidentally announced the same day as Prohm's extension. Hoiberg was hired 4 days later. They didn't want to fire Miles until they knew they had Fred despite the rumors he was their guy.

TJ was also announced as UNLV's hire the day after Prohm's extension was announced. Both TJ and Fred were waiting to see what Prohm was going to do.

Lots of interesting "what if" stories there.

What if TJ gets the job in 2016. He'd be younger and have no experience as a head coach before that, but he'd be working with the loaded Hoiberg roster and the momentum of a tremendously successful era of Cyclone basketball instead of having to rebuild everything from scratch as he has.

What if Prohm leaves for Alabama...

Does Pollard forgive Fred for flirting with the Gophers and leaving for the Bulls? Does Fred want to come back and commit to being the coach at Iowa State in the long term and not wander back to the NBA?

Or does Pollard just go with TJ at that point?

So many interesting possibilities...

Do you care to expound on this? I understand if you can’t.
He knew them both in high school. What he told me doesn't really matter any more, so I won't pass it on. Suffice to say that I think Bubu didn't get a fair shake. Legal entities (university and state) either cleared him or declined to prosecute. That should have been the end of it.

I get it. I didn’t follow closely back then.

I'm sure being the celebrity he was in Ames it got old being constantly recognized and talked to. I'm sure it wore on him. Nothing wrong with that. I would probably feel the same after awhile. Don't think it means he hated Ames.
Just read this board and then think about meeting most of the people on here in person everywhere you went. I'd want out of Ames also. Kidding... not kidding.

I've heard rumors that Sam Hoiberg may be transferring from Nebraska to Iowa State to carry on his father's traditions. I also heard rumblings that Fred may be moving on from Nebraska. Anyone else heard anything about this?
Maybe Fred will be an assistant coach under Otz.

He went to coach at the basketball wasteland of Nebraska just so he could beat Iowa more. How dare all of you trash our prodigal dreamy son for risking his legacy just to **** iowa more often?

I can’t imagine this because any coach we ever hire MUST HAVE PRIOR HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE. No ifs and or buts. K St should fire Jerome Tang too because he didn’t have previous HC experience. FULL SEARCH!!!!

I know CW is writing an ISU book about some back stories, but this same post gets me thinking of the broader context of coaching searches and "what ifs". If i recall, McDermott was a prime candidate for K-State when we got him (when K-State snagged Huggy which likely was the catalyst to their recent successes). What if that happened? Who would have we hired then.

What if Nick Nurse would have been retained? So many dominoes.

And any prior success they had as a head coach like making 2 consecutive NCAA tourneys from the Summit League can't in part be because they had good players.

Idk. We had a roster that was really top loaded and not much after the older guys were gone. Don't forget Prohm came in and got maybe the best recruiting class in our schools history. About all he did though.
Fred had no problem playing 7 deep. I have no doubt the 2 years after we left would have been better than what they were.

We missed on many prospects towards the end of his time here. Maybe it's different if he's locked in. Hard saying.

True, but we had a solid core coming back regardless. Fred just needed to nab a couple transfers that could contribute for 2015-16 and I have no doubt he would have.
The transfer game was changing around that time. We were no longer on the cutting edge of it and the big names had really picked up the transfer game. With a few misses, tougher transfer market and the fishbowl of Ames, can anyone blame Fred for making a professional change? He traded those issues for others in Chicago but as a professional, sometimes you need those different challenges to grow.

So Fred legit stopped recruiting essentially during the year. Burton showed up and that was it. It was known pretty early that Fred wasn’t going to be there the next year.

We definitely would’ve landed a couple of our key targets had Fred stayed and been committed to recruiting. We also would’ve been able to get some big transfers.

All in all, it is what it is at that point. Regardless of who the coach was, Naz still was going to sit out that next year with his hip surgery and Hallice Cooke was going to be limited due to his own hip surgery that he just had. Hallice ended up being an okay rotational piece but before his surgery at Oregon State, he was a stud and he’d have helped out a ton.
