I spoke directly with an athlete at Iowa who told me that the baseball player made a bet from inside the facility triggering the geofence and kicking off the whole investigation.

Funny because hawk fans I know are blaming everything on Bruce. Ex GF or something ratted him out and that kicked off everything.

In hindsight, the smart thing for the ISU athletic department to do would have been to meet with the players 1:1 every year in August/September. Go over the gambling rules and emphasize the severe nature of the penalties if you bet on ISU sports. Encourage the players to own up to any past transgressions. I'm sure the school would have cut the suspension time in half if the players had reported the violations on their own.

I could be wrong, but I believe the NCAA just recently came out with the penalties for sports gambling. The staff could simply explain that sports gambling is not allowed when they discussed team rules, I suppose. But the staff didn't know how severe any penalties from the NCAA would be even this time a year ago

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the NIL era and athletes betting on sports started at the same time. Granted, not every kid is going to blow his/her money on dumb things like cars, electronics, sports betting, etc., but what do you expect when you give a 19/20 year old $10,000 for doing virtually nothing to earn it? The IRS is starting to hammer kids for not paying taxes on NIL deals and I think this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to sports betting by athletes.

I do believe there are many athletes that are using their NIL money for reasonable things (food, supporting family, etc).

I mean it could have been both or the part that got the football team involved, all I know is the athlete that told me that had no reason to lie, they weren’t involved in any of it but that doesn’t mean they didn’t tell me 2nd or 3rd hand info either

It's hammered into everyone. There are even compliance reminders about gambling, illegal benefits, etc., posted above urinals and in the stalls.

The small bets were probably a way to see if they could get away with it. Still if a player bet only $10 (even on their own ISU game) and stopped there, I don't think the punishment should be as severe as the punishment for a $500 bet that isn't on an ISU game. Both are incredibly stupid, but what is a player trying to gain by betting only $10?

They placed hundreds of small bets just as a test? Is that your best guess?

Nope. Penalties were actually phased down from a no tolerance policy. The BIGGEST difference is that with sportbook apps everything became traceable in some circumstances.

The penalties that just came out from the NCAA were a reduction from what they had previously. Previously, the baseline penalty was a season suspension for any bet, though the NCAA had flexibility to change that for the situation. Still, a Virginia Tech player got suspended for 6 games last season after self-reporting bets he had made on the NBA (the suspension before appeal was 9 games).

A college football player was suspended 6 games for betting on NBA. Is that outdated?

Hokies football player Alan Tisdale self-reported legal bets made on the NBA finals, resulting in a suspension for half of his senior year.

Iowa knows of 1 (a DT I believe) because he was supposed to go to media day. Thats the 800 pound gorilla. All we know about so far is those who were brought up on charges

It's cute that you think this is some kind of education issue and if we had just done more hand-holding and pinky-swearing, we'd have avoided this. Would you be this generous if the accused players were from Oklahoma or Texas?

I didn't realize it was hundreds of small bets. Thanks for clarifying. Still if the bet on an ISU game was very small ($10) and happened only once, I don't think the player should get suspended for the whole year. That could have been an honest mistake or momentary lapse of judgment. Size of the bet should matter greatly.

Why haven't any non-athletes been charged with tampering or underaged gambling? Surely the DCI has uncovered other illegal activities as a result of their investigation but it's hard to say at this point that they aren't specifically targeting Iowa and ISU football and baseball players.

You know a really easy way to not 'make an honest mistake' is to not have the app on your phone that they EXPLICITLY tell you that you can't have.

I was in the endzone seating and saw it close-up. Yes, he likely just slipped, but still he was too good for that to happen. It ruined the rest of the game for me.
