Wow, Gilbert didn’t even win the backup kicker job. Appears he can be added to the list of high school kicker recruits that have not panned out for Campbell. That appears to be one area where he has yet to succeed in recruiting
I definitely took note of that too. With how mental the kicking position is, I would not be surprised if he is no longer with the team and is looking for a fresh start somewhere.

Is it wrong that is bothers me that these are all paddles rather than oars?

The State of Hockey
Ken Stabler comes to mind, but yeah, not many.
I wonder how much of that comes down to left handed people only being 10% of the population though. In college there certainly have been successful left handed qbs recently. Tua from Alabama, Kellen Moore boise state, Tim Tebow (I consider him a good college qb not so much for NFL), and Matt Leinart.

Saying that I do agree, watching left-handed qbs feel odd. I wonder how much of an adjustment there is from going from a right-handed qb to a left-handed one. if there is much if all.

I was a WR in HS and had a lefty QB and it wasn't that big of a difference unless we were in warmups and I was running routes for all of the QBs, where I'd be getting a ball from a righty as well. The spin is different but at the end of the day, just catch the ball.

This statement is purely an aesthetic one.

But lefty QBs always weird me out.

Offenses built around them just always seem... awkward. Backwards. Guys are generally better blocking and running to the right than they are going to the left. This has been true throughout human history, too... the Greek phalanx and Roman legions were known by their commanders to be rightward strong.

A lefty QB cuts against that. Some people who actually know football will probably say I'm stupid for saying that, but I can't think of many great NFL QBs who were lefties outside of Steve Young.

This wasn't actually Dekkers' problem... goodness me we all know what that ultimately was... but the whole thing just felt "wrong" last year as a result. A lefty with his arm should be a pitcher, not a QB.
Bonus points for working in phalanx to the depth chart discussion

LB is interesting, here are some recruit rankings.

Starters:
Gerry Vaughn: 1890 in 2018
Jack Sadowsky: 1238 in 2023
Carson Willich: 1251 in 2022

Backups:
Will McLaughlin: 691 in 2022
Zachary Lovett: 804 in 2021 (Mizzou Transfer)
Jacob Ellis: (Iowa Western CC Transfer)
Caleb Bacon: Walk-On 2021

Others:
Jacob Imming: 464 in 2022
Carston Marshall: 1072 in 2021
Joseph Jean-Louis: 1596 in 2023
Aidan Ralph: 1911 in 2021
In other words, Veidt takes who he likes, and pays no attention to rankings.

Need WR to step up. I would trade any of these guys for deshaunte jones right now. No Greg Gaines is disappointing, thought he would be a big piece of the offense moving forward

I'm not surprised after listening to Hark's comments on the LBs that Will isn't a starter. That's not a negative comment either. Hark mentioned that Will's a pass rushing type guy (verbatim), so I'd reckon we'll see him in a lot of 3rd and 8+ types of situations and just let him pin his ears back.

I would love it if someone asked CMC today about some of these two deeps, but probably won’t happen.

Ask about Gaines, ask how Neal became the starter at LT, ask about Willich beating out McLaughlin, the kicker, etc etc. Just do it!
Sounds like McLaughlin is more of a passing down/blitzing LB than an every down LB.

So am I missing something with Mendezoon? I thought he was supposed to be good?

Love this guy....Is he still with the team?? LOVES to hit...unlike MOST......and plays with fire.....anyone know anything about him??

With all of the LB depth and inexperience at DE, he moved to DE.

There’s a whole bunch of conclusion-jumping in this thread. It’s the first two deep of the season—something we should always take with a tablespoon full of salt.

Same goes for the listed kickers—especially since they didn’t separate out a kickoff guy vs FG’s.

He is still on the roster. But then again so is Dekkers

Some have said that Sadowsky kind of reminds them of Mike Rose. I'm sure in some areas yes. Rose made an immediate impact as a freshmen, 11 tackles agains Iowa. Kid had barely any experience when he took the field that day. I doubt Sadowsky will be that good out of the gate, but my goodness, the kid is 245 lbs, Rose was only 220 as freshmen.
Some accounts have Sadowsky ahead of Rose at the same stage. Which isn’t surprising, since he’s been here since Spring.

When I watched his HS video, he reminded me more of AJ Klein than Rose. Guess we’ll see how that turns out.
