Campbell’s Offense

I struggle with ISU's offense, because our defense and special teams aren't going to win games. So our offense needs to be MUCH better.

I feel like our offense is outdated with its focus on stretching defenses horizontally with short passes. Defenses have adapted and it's difficult for offenses to consistently score TDs with 10 play drives. Today's great offenses get chunk plays. Last night KU had 16 plays over 10 yards after 3 quarters. Today ISU had 5 plays over 10 yards and Higgins 16 yard TD was our longest.

I feel like we have dumbed down the QB position at ISU. If a team is going to run the RPO mesh, then the QB needs to be a running threat. Otherwise just run from the I to create a power run game.

It’s all self fulfilling IMO. Constantly saying it’s hard to win at a place like ISU…. and that it’s not about winning or losing, etc, etc.

KF flat out said this week that it’s about winning football games. You can see the difference.

I really don’t get the people saying that our scheme is bad. There’s nothing wrong with our scheme, and it’s honestly a beautiful thing to watch when executed right. Unfortunately, our execution as of recent has been horrible (which is still on the head coach).

I want to see if this Oline can turn a corner over the next 2-3 weeks.

That last call was really bad though.

For the people saying scheme is the problem, I’d like to hear what scheme you think this team is winning in. Scheme doesn’t fix receivers dropping balls and bad playcalling.

Does anyone want to talk about the talent problem? Or are we going to pretend that isn’t happening?
No, if you question our talent (at any position) you can’t be a fan. Sorry, rules as they were told to me.

Dude.

1) Scheme is a huge part of play calling. So those two are 100% related. They can exist outside of each other but bad play calls can make a good scheme look bad and a bad scheme can make good play calls look bad.

2) Scheme does effect receivers. if a receiver struggles catching slants and bubbles but excels at catching drags, arrows and verts, then why do you run slants and bubbles? Coach to your players strength. Putting them in the best possible position.

Does it fix everything? No. But it helps a little.

As for what scheme overall, I wouldn't change personnel. But I'd play at a slightly higher tempo, a little bit more RPO, build in a few more perimeter runs , a couple sprint outs and a few ,more verticals.

Essentially, Utah. Physical team, very good defense, but is more diverse on offfense.

Yea because Duke, Kansas, Wake Forest, Kansas State, they walk into a kid's living room for football and everyone else knows that recruiting battle is over.

It was all really bad today offensively. That TD drive with the clock management and tempo was one of the worst I’ve seen. Just an opinion but that was what I thought to be the worst I’ve seen in a long long…..long long time. Christ

I think some of that is because there is the very well perception, reality or not, that we're on declining or stagnant.

For a couple years around the Fiesta Bowl, there was hope. An idea we might take that step. Now we've slipped and are struggling.

On a similar concept but not at their level, it’s like Clemson. Though obviously never reached the heights of Clemson.
He’s going to struggle to get guys here playing offense like this. And we still lose most in state guys. Just reality.

Its been bad for 2 and a half seasons iMO.

We've scored 4 touchdowns essentially in two home games where the offense had to do the work. (Pick 6 and a 21 yard short field).

At least we don’t have to spend any NIL funds on offense. We’re gonna need to throw money at most of our defense starting with Dominque Orange.

Campbell’s offense is low risk low reward. Accept it. He wants to win with ball control, time of possession, field position, and winning the turnover battle. That’s the kind of style you adopt when you don’t have any star talent. It’s worked before. Basically Iowa Light.

That won't happen with these players. I'm starting to think Campbell isn't as good as we thought. He's not coaching to players' strengths on offense and putting them in position to fail repeatedly.

That concerns me but also the firing of an OC and OL coach only to come out the exact same offense and appear to think that was going to be enough

Nowhere and Everywhere
The play before the 46 yard field goal drove home nothing changed on O. 3rd and 8 and they run a 5 yard out to the sideline on short side of field. Incomplete pass but even if it was complete it’s 3 yards short.

Same ineffective head scratchers as last year.

Thats why I defend the OL... I don't know if the average fan realizes how much harder it is for a OL to block when all 11 defenders know they can be aggressive in flying up.

Its also why bubble screens for us get blown up so much. Because safeties have ZERO fear of anything down field vertically. So for all runs and lateral passes, they can scream down field 100 miles an hour.

And most offenses, don't account for safeties in the blocking scheme. And that also gives a defensive coordinator more options when it comes to stemming, stunting and blitzing.

Imagine what our defense might look like if Heacock knew either the opponent couldn't run.

It's almost all the same O-line as the past 2-3 years. Why does everyone think they haven't already turned the corner? This is who they are. Until Simmons, Treiber, Miller, Hufford, and Remsburg are gone or lose their jobs to younger guys, this is it.

They're huge dudes, but they just aren't good. They are slow, miss assignments, and fooled often by stunts.

I'm seeing if Clanton can't get some progress.

First photo they are playing 9 yards off bitter. Second photo is when play is developed. As you see he still has plenty of space for quick throw or quick slant. Play action to quick slant. Or quick throw after snap. The play was in traffic in center of field for deflection. Before the snap you see how many Hawkeyes are within 5 yards of the line. There were so many blown options all day like this with space.
It would of forced them not to play 9 yards back and then opened up passing down the field. I’m not understanding this coaching philosophy of offense.

Why did they refuse to use the middle of the field today?
