Sorry if this has been said, but it's hilarious that Purdy is getting trashed after the Browns game. Through 5 games the Browns defense has given up the fewest yards of any team since 1971. Considering how the game has changed, a defense in 2023 has no business holding that distinction.

The Browns defense isn't good. It's frickin' elite and off to a historic start. And Purdy drove them down for the winning FG.

Recipe to shut down Purdy:
- Be at home
- Be a top 3 defense
- Bad weather
- Get pressure on almost every play
- Have 2 of his top offensive weapons leave mid game for injuries
- Have 49ers NFL FG kicker miss a 40 yarder after Purdy drove them into that range in the final minute

Every team will just copy that and Purdy will be working checkout at Walgreens next year. It was a great run while it lasted.

If Purdy doesn't bounce back for the Minnesota game I'll eat my hat.

Purdy is nails. Purdy is driven. Purdy learns from his mistakes. The Viking defense isn't the Browns. It wont be raining inside the Bank. Purdy has an extra day to prepare. Purdy has never lost a game on October 23rd.

Browns are a great defense. We will see if the historical level of performance continues. They've benefitted from bad weather in 2 of their games and Burrow was a disaster against everybody in the first 3 weeks, so I'm not sure that first game means a whole lot. The one average offense they faced in normal conditions, Baltimore, they got smoked and Baltimore hung 28 on them.

I don't know if in the current NFL you can say "hanging" 28 on a defense. What's the scoring average across the league, 23 or so?

And I don't expect them to keep up a historic pace, as 5 games is a small sample size. But it's pretty impressive what their defense has done so far no matter what.

Scoring is down across the league. I heard a stat that said it's the lowest per game average through the first 6 weeks of a season since 2011. So even with the historic defense from Cleveland, other defenses are doing work this season.

21 pts. Offense is struggling league wide this year. Funny considering you had one of the most impressive offensive games in the history of football by the Dolphins this year.

Jim Schwartz really brought that Cleveland defense to a new level. They were good/decent in recent years mainly due to Garrett but weren't this good.

Any theories why that is? That's pretty crazy that scoring is down so much.

I watched an analysis from Chase Daniel about Purdy's game. He said that Purdy missed some throws but still played decent. The deep ball to Aiyuk was a perfect throw (Purdy also got smoked on that play) but the defender made a great play and Aiyuk still should have caught it. The fumble where the ball slipped out of Purdy's hand was a perfect play call that probably would have been a TD if it doesn't slip out (SF had five blockers out front with only three defenders).

The article I linked discusses it.
That article definitely hit on several things I've been seeing. Plenty of red zone blitzing, heavy zone concepts that limit big plays, and lots of inexperience at the QB position.

I know you're being facetious but there are things you can do to limit him. Pressure of course, bracket the edges, use a robber to take away his intermediate middle routes. He hasn't been the greatest fade route QB but if he can do that he's pretty hard to stop.

Kicker needs to miss 2 field goals.

Of course you can do these things to limit him, but honestly it's not a smart take. You can't do ALL of these things at the same time without 14 defenders.

Giants and Pitt blitzed a whole bunch, didn't matter.
Rams did a combo of bracketing and man coverage, didn't matter
I think it was the Seahawks last year that tried the QB spy, didn't matter

Any of these things can slow him (or any QB) down, but it's a matter of confusing him and/or a great counter-gameplan that will really do the trick. The good thing for Brock and the niners is that 1) it's not easy to confuse him and 2) it's not easy to predict what Shanahan is going to do.

Fixed.

How much better would the Browns have needed to be (an already elite D) to force Purdy to throw as many pics as greatest QB in history Hurts threw on the same day?

I get what you're saying but we're countering a lot of silliness as ISU/Purdy fans. As others have pointed out this is the first time in my life I have heard of "almost interceptions" being talked about like a serious stat. When the MVP candidate QBs have 3 real interceptions and you're talking about Purdy's "almost interceptions" there is some real stupid discussion being had by morons who somehow get paid to discuss this stuff.

Or just poorly received. I'm not saying you do it all at once. Regardless y'all can't stand to hear anything but 'Purdy is God.'

several dropped passes and the put them in the perfect position to win at the end. that is what good players do.

I am a huge vikings fan, but I hope Purdy goes off for 6 touchdowns on them on the road.
my luck the vikings will actually win.

Nah, he's just doing all the right things and he's pretty damn good. I'd hope any Iowa State fan knows he's got his flaws. He was literally benched his senior year against our top rival.

The problem is, there's just so much talk about him and depending on where you look you can find plenty of people saying he's the best ever or that he's a complete fraud. He's neither.
