Yeah it certainly sucks that it happened but he waved his hand which is all he has to do. So unless someone can point me to a rule that shows it's a blown call I don't get the "controversy" over the call. It wasn't a bad spot or a judgement PI or something
It has been called before to negate a TD return. Wiscy in 2015.

It's really a stupid rule then even if it's called correctly. I assume the whole point is so you don't trick the other team, but as you can see in that video NW was still going full steam ahead becuase everyone knows it wasn't a fair catch signal. I will say that overturning that one is alot worse than DeJean today.

One other point, it does appear Minnesota might have let up a little, but that has no bearing on anything. Plays like thay happen all the time, especially where the ref can't figure out if it's a forward or backward pass, then the other team runs it in for a TD while the other team is standing around.

Are you saying that Minnesota let up a little but it had no bearing on the play?

No, I meant it should have had no bearing at all if that persuaded the officials to make that call.

In both videos it appears that pathetic tackling the by kicking team also contributed. You are taught to play until the whistle.

Finally seeing the video, I agree his intent wasn’t to call fair catch.

But also no question in my mind a couple of the gophers pursuing him interpreted (or at least were unsure) and let up on the play. Only when the first guy missed the tackle and the play continued did they resume trying to tackle him.

So intent is irrelevant, it impacted the kick coverage and should have been flagged. If that happened to ISU I’d be pissed about it too though
I'd be pissed for about 30 seconds, until I see it is the right call. And then I would be pissed that WE made the mistake, not pissed at the refs for making the right call.

The NFL has a similar rule with valid and invalid fair catch signals. It’s a part of the game, and has been for some time, so maybe you just feel stupid for not knowing it.

I agree with that. It didn’t have a bearing on the officials call.

The fact that he was waving his left arm and defenders rightfully assumed he was fair catching the ball was the right call. Especially considering that Minnesota had already been flagged for interfering with Cooper on an earlier punt.

People…. BF’s 25 pt per game thing in his contract means NOTHING!!!

I keep seeing people post about BF losing his job if he doesn’t average 25 pts per game…. that is nonsense!! It never says such a thing in his contract.

BF will be here as long as KF wants him to be.
It think most know this. That doesnt make it any less hilarious, and the way the media cover it and the memes that come from it, make it hilarious.

Makes the squawks even more of a joke, which is what most enjoy.

Lol, ok, what are you, a head official for the NFL? Most fans aren't going to know all the little intricacies of every rule. The State Department should just send you to the Middle East right now since you know everything.

End of first quarter:

Sick child: “Look daddy! They are waving to us!! The whole stadium is waving to us! Even all the players! This is amazing!!”

Dad: “yes sweetheart. They all wish you the best and hope you can get home soon”

Near the end of the game:
Sick child: “Daddy… why are all those nice people who were waving to us now throwing things on the field? I thought they were friendly, but they sure don’t look friendly anymore”

Dad: “well, sweetheart. That’s how that fan base normally behaves. They have a reputation of being rude and abusive, especially when they are losing.”

Sick child: “So why did they wave to us earlier?”

Dad: “well, they think if people associate the wave to Iowa fans, maybe people would forget how terrible their fan base acts.”

Sick child: “I don’t feel good anymore”
Dad: "Also, don't paint all the Hawkeyes as bad. Cooper DeJean is a great role model - didn't you see him waving to you at the end of the game?"
