I saw in Cooper’s post game interview he made similar comments, saying he was just trying to keep his balance and keep from going out of bounds or something since he was so close to the sidelines. I think the reality is probably just that he was full of adrenaline in the moment and wasn’t really thinking.

I’ve spent too much time tonight reading about the play and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s just unfortunate. I acknowledge by the letter of the rule that can be called. I think the intent of the rule is so people don’t try to game it and give ambiguous signals that could be interpreted as maybe a fair catch.

But you can’t convince me that any Minnesota player thought that was a fair catch signal and for that reason similar stuff happens all the time and is almost never called - especially not overturning what was called on the field to change the winner of the game when we started out reviewing to see if he stepped out of bounds…
Sorry you feel that way. You are wrong. officials got it right. He tried to game the situation just like he is taught . Just like when the defensive lineman tried to swat the ball away from the center at the end of the game before it is was snapped.

it is only cheating if you get caught.

Not exactly sure.
He pointed with his right arm and is making a downward motion with his left, I've never seen anyone attempt to make a fair catch like that before. I guess it's the right call however ridiculous it might be, but his intent was clearly to get his own guy away from the ball.
I think someone needs to learn what downward means. I just saw it and the second d one clearly went above his shoulder pads and looked like a fair catch call.

I guess the ncaa needs to have a different rule for Iowa.

when they are waving their arms above their shoulder pads, that means for the team to get away from the ball.

Also, for anyone saying why were there any MN guys running at him; generally you want to be close incase he fumbled, and during a fair catch, a ref will yell fair catch has been called/ let up guys (or something like that) and/or blow the whistle; to make sure that there isn’t someone who was getting blocked or couldn’t see the wave if the returner is turned sideways like he was here.

Guess Iowa is reviewing the tape of the fans throwing crap at the Minnesota team.

They think they might be able to find a more accurate passer than they have.

That's a scary thought with how small those sidelines are. Players could get hurt. I mostly saw stuff coming from the corner of the endzone on the Iowa side as I think that's where students are.

Before posting, perhaps you SHOULD do more research to back up your "it happens all the time & isn't called" argument. I have no sympathy for your Hoks since it was technically correct according to official rules. You can legitimately whine on this site when you get jobbed on actual bad calls (ex: our 2017 game vs KSU when 3 flags were picked up and waved off by refs that were NOT the ones who threw the initial flag - the last one where Alan Lazard was being mugged by a CB would have resulted in a first down assuring us a victory).
One could claim that there are dozens of holding calls not called in every game, so if Iowa would have gotten called for an obvious and blatant hold on that run back, then they were screwed because although it is by the rules, there were other instances that were not called? The circular waving of the left arm was obvious and blatant and by the rule, thus it was called.
