I haven't read every post and I have no pony in the game as a non-drinker. But I think people are only looking at the revenue/risk side of this and missing another big picture - of equal or maybe even bigger concern.

As much as athletic event attendance across the country is decreasing (not at ISU yet) due to high ticket prices and all of the associated financial asks of being a fan, a potentially equal or bigger parallel reason is the convenience, comfort, and freedom of watching from home - and the less taxing the day is on a family or just spouses.

As ticket prices and costs of being a fan continue to skyrocket, the experience at home is also getting better every year. That means stadiums and programs need to continue to improve the gameday experience before, during, and after events. While many people can go a few hours without drinking in the stadium, it's just one of many growing factors that give people reasons to watch from home - even in a driveway tailgate environment.

There are those that will never move away from tailgating and going to games, but the trend towards shrinking stadium and arena seating capacity has many reasons and they add up quickly.

Sounds like people care about something, this anyway! I'd be for alcohol sale in the stadium, arena. The prices should probably be a "little" on the high side, but not overly so. Keep them realistic for most people that might want a beer or 2.

People are still going to take their halftime walk, and/or smuggle.

People would likely be less drunk if this occurred. As it is now every one is going out to get loaded at half time and it hits them right as they get back in their seats. Same amount of piss. Same amount of people leaving and coming back.

That’s what everyone says. But honestly I doubt it.

Good point. You also have to account for people that might stop going with the beer sales. I know this board doesn’t think that will happen. And it is probably a net positive. But you’d lose 2 of the people that have season tickets with me.

Maybe. There will definitely be a better chance I get gross beer spilled on me. ;)

I won’t be upset when they start selling beer. But it will be annoying.

Speaking purely about myself, but I'd definitely consume less alcohol if they sold beer. It's a lot easier to smuggle in airline bottles and 500ml of whiskey to mix with hot chocolate than it is to bring in a 12 pack of beer, so me and my crew are usually consuming liquor at a steady clip during the game. We'd abandon that and switch to a few beers throughout the game if we could just get them in the stadium.

And I know this would apply to a lot more people than just me.

Additionally, people seem to ramp up their drinking as it gets closer to gametime so they can coast for the game. If people didn't feel the need to do that they'd arrive in better shape. Same goes for halftime walks where people feel the need to get the most bang for their buck by consuming as much as possible in that short time frame.

Seems easy to me. We only sell Ames Lager... Oh what's that you want to give us money to sell beer? How much?
Ames Lager doesn't get the AD itself a dime. They'd be MUCH more interested in selling one of the beers they've partnered with.

At the Univ. of North Carolina, alcohol has “helped the bottom line" with about $4M in sales. After having $320,213 in "net sales during the 2019-20 athletic year," the school "quadrupled that number last year and will see an increase again after this season" (AP, 11/6).

The biggest anecdotal difference for me is that you used to see people kind of 'stumbling' into the building because they just slammed two or three more right before walking in. You don't see that anymore and beer doesn't get spilled any more than any other liquid does in the seating area....

Jerry World has a drunk tank (yes it holds offenders for all incidents, but lets be honest most incidents are alcohol related)....but even they had the foresight to put tv screens in the jail so you can still watch the Cowboys lose.

Game day experience matters. The customer is always right, even the drunk ones ;)
