A lot of tackles were made catching backs from behind by our backers. They didn’t do well on setting the edge or picking the hole. Will Mac was probably our best overall backer last year.

That say this every offseason. But once the season rolls around, they’re in the 3 man front 95% of the time. It’s BS and I doubt it happens.

I don't recall it being talked about all that much by the staff.
CF talks about it an awful lot.
Then it reverts back to posters thinking ISU O only sees a 3 man in practice like they don't have scout teams running the opponents' stuff.
I would think it could be done situationally based on tendencies or just like goal line/short yardage packages.
I would prefer a coaching staff to develop schemes that will put their players in the best situations to make a play. Meaning the scheme should fit the player. That's far better than trying to force a player to fit a scheme.

I'm glad they're reading my emails. We have really good DL personnel to play in a four man front, especially with Singleton, Onyedim, and Orange. You could play those guys all at the same time with a pure pass rusher opposite Onyedim and cause some real issues.
I absolutely think that doing something like situationally could pay off. Flip from a 3 to a 4 depending on down and distance. But, you can run into issues subbing there too if the opponent is going no huddle. IMO the best way to do this would be to have a versatile SAM LB that can play in space, but also put his hand on the ground and play RE. That's probably McLaughlin, but could also be Kenard Snyder? Of course, if a team is huddling, you can mix and match however you want.
I just think that Campbell has said pretty much every year that we will see more 4 man front and it never really happens for whatever reason. Our depth chart has had 4 DL positions this whole time. Guess I'll believe it when I see it.
I was not impressed by Sadowsky last year. His name was rarely called on a tackle and he struggled to play the run, especially early on. In fall camp, he was drawing comparisons to Mike Rose, but I saw Rose make more plays in the SDSU game than I saw Sadowsky make most of the year. He is still young, but he would have to take a massive leap in production.
Can you find this by chance? Was he talking about what the OL will face throughout the season?
Good point. Thats really why we switched to a 3 man front in the first place. D-line depth was lower, LB talent was very high and DB depth was stronger.
The bolded line is an interesting question with the helmet communication that's coming to college football. Some teams might go to the huddle more than previously since it will be easier to communicate complicated calls directly to the QB to communicate them to the offense, and then they avoid the risk of calls being stolen. But other teams might just go faster since they won't have to wait for signs to come in from the sideline and the QB can yell out calls to the offense.
Everyone talks about the offense and lack of running game against Memphis. The terrible defense we played got overlooked.
He was making bad reads which is normal for a freshman. He has the physicality but I'm not sure he's fast enough to play in space.
I'd like to know wtf happened that game in general
We haven't matched that performance since as far as the opposing QB being completely overwhelmed and clueless. Our blitzing has been a major weakness since Rose graduated. It's especially bad against Iowa unless Petras is QB.
