Jesus, why can’t you people enjoy the moment?

This is the first time since the Walden era we’re hearing chatter about a Cyclone team potentially playing its way into contending for a spot in a football playoff.
We had people talking about us for a playoff spot in 2021 after we won the fiesta bowl. We were 5th in preseason. Didn’t end up working out that year. It is always great to get realistic projections that the team is expected to be successful. Plenty of games left. I plan to enjoy them 1 at a time. If we are having this same conversation late in the year, I will be ecstatic.

One way the playoff was designed that is a little annoying is that the top 4 conference champs get autobids AND byes. The 5th champ plus 7 at larges play in the first round, and that’s the only round on campus.

So if you win the Big 12 to get in, the odds are very high you’ll get a bye and then play some SEC 2nd or 3rd place team in an NFL domed stadium in the quarterfinal round where they probably have a crowd advantage.

The only ways Iowa State would ever host a playoff game are (1) get in as an at large, which is going to be very difficult for the Big 12 and I think it would take something like 11-2 with a CCG loss or even 11-1 and left out of the CCG in a tiebreaker to do it, or (2) win the Big 12 but be ranked lower than all of the SEC, B1G, ACC, and top G5 conference champs, which will also be tricky to do.

Worrying about the field conditions at JTS for the first round playoff game is exactly where every Cyclone fan needs to be right now.

We deserve this after 1.25+ centuries of football futility and heartbreak.

I’d much prefer to get a bye than worrying about field conditions. I do have a hard time believing the Big12 runner up is #8 coming off a loss in the conference championship game. That would mean that ISU would have to been in the top 5 going into the game.

This is the first year its been 12. I mean jack yourself off but its week 2. Walden era has nothing to do with this year. I willl be tickled pink if we make the playoffs but beating 2 ****** teans is nothing special.

Nah. This happy to be here attitude has been obsolete since 2012. A deep run is the standard.

What the eff are you even on right now? We're not talking about the NCAA basketball tournament here; we're talking the CFP, which ISU has only sniffed even once in its existence (2000). Just making the playoff would be incredible; one win would be unbelievable, especially if it ends up being UGA that's waiting for us.

It will be interesting to see how the committee selects the at large spots. Right now the SEC has 6 teams ranked in the Top 7 of the AP Poll.

So would they put 11-2 Iowa State big 12 runner up in the playoff OVER a 10-2 Ole Miss or Tennessee team?

I hope so, it would be so fun to see UT and OU immediately regret their life choices

Between this and getting told to jack myself off by someone whose avatar is a still from a 64-year-old RomCom I can’t help but question my life choices and feel nostalgic for the glory days of WRNL.

The subject line of thread you’re commenting on is an obvious allusion to the NCAA basketball tournament.

The absurdity of conflating ISU’s basketball and football histories should fairly clearly reveal the use of irony with humorous intent.

To be clear, I unapologetically find a national sports pundit projecting ISU to land a playoff spot in a meaningless article a mere two games into the season to be ******* awesome. I’m not sure my brain could withstand the flood of endorphins an actual playoff berth would cause.

To be fair I earnestly can’t tell if you’re being a self-import jackass or are dense enough to think I was being salty about the seeding projection in the football playoff for a Cyclone team that has yet to beat a team with a pulse…so I guess we’re even?

Also: The CFP didn’t start until 2014. 2000 was only the 3rd year of the BCS championship, and at no point did ISU ever sniff a berth in the BCS Championship.

You’re 100% right. I didn’t think that through.
