I’m only worried about Campbell leaving to go to OSU, Michigan, or ND. OSU and Michigan won’t be open. ND could be a bit scary, but I doubt those guys are too excited about a .500 coach from Iowa State, even if Campbell does have a great year this year.

Agree. Even if Freeman continues to bomb, they took a "chance" on promoting the DC. The boosters will not allow ND to take another "chance". They will want a big name.

Feels like there’s a time paradox for CMC at a larger job. Those jobs are going to want instant gratification: Michigan, OSU, ND, Penn State, USC, whatever. Hell, there are OSU fans who want Day gone because he’s lost to Michigan recently. He’s 58-8!

Matt is a builder. He would need time to get things up and going. Would those programs be patient enough for that? Jamie has called this out publicly in past.

Freeman will get time at ND, but they can’t wait forever. Hartman and Leonhard have been QB Rentals. Eventually you have to develop guys.

I'm going to stay away from the SEC guys simply for not knowing enough about them.

But I don't see why Campbell wouldn't be on at least the same tier as Big 12 guys like Kleiman and Leipold assuming the Cyclones have an excellent season this year and maybe even make the playoff.

I don't know much about college football coaches' personal lives, either, but Campbell is Catholic and has just a beautiful family and no hint of personal scandal. That has to count for something.

Campbell (at 44) with that family and his record as a coach just screams Notre Dame to me.

OSU and Michigan both could be open, neither would have CMC on their lists though. OSU is not hiring a defensive minded coach that doesn’t take advantage of their offensive talent pipeline. Michigan won’t hire a non Michigan Man with no real connection to the program.

ND is a possibility but CMC would have to have an absolutely dominant year including a playoff win to be considered there. Very possible but if he’s able to get a playoff win at ISU with no pressure there isn’t much reason to leave. Especially since he likes it in Ames.

Grubb is working for the Seahawks. I could see Tommy Rees getting a look if they fire Freeman.

Former ND qb, former ND OC, former Alabama OC under Saban, now working in the NFL.
it'll never happen due to his off field issues but Urban Meyer will be floated if ND opens

guessing Urban himself would crawl to South Bend for that job

Yep, it was a great win over Iowa. I love to think about an entire generation of hok students who never saw a victory over Iowa State at Kinnick. That really warms my heart.

The hoks are a relevant team and have a national profile (ugh), and it's important for us to beat them. I also enjoy hearing CMC's name mentioned for other coaching opportunities. It raises our profile as well.

However, reading through his comments over the last couple of days, he's driven to win a championship with a team HE built. Don't know if that will ever happen in my lifetime at ISU (I'm 70) but I want to believe this is where he wants to do it. I'm not worried about CMC going anywhere with this win over a middling Big team that is clearly stuck in its old ways. I just wish the national press could get it out of their heads that the hoks are still something special.

I agree. CMC is Freeman 2.0 at ND. High character, well loved by players, defense minded. And he’s already in the building. I expect Freeman to shuffle coordinators before he gets the axe.

What’s your read on CMC to Penn State? From the outside, it seems like Franklin has a lot of admin BS there.

Franklin is fairly secure especially with his new deal and is coming off of 10 and 11 win seasons which is gonna be enough to get into the playoff most years. PSU is one of the schools that is going to really benefit from the expanded playoff. He’s not a great in game coach but he recruits really well and PSU isn’t like OSU or some SEC schools that demand national championships. As long as he gets the playoff births and pulls down an occasional win he should be ok.

One of the good things about having Lance Leipold (despite loss to Illinois) and Chris Klieman in the conference is that there are other "hot" coaches besides CMC. Doubt one Iowa game changes that.
So…which of the two will Iowa hire to take over from Kirk?
