In the 90s whenever a design program was missing a font it defaulted to Courier as a way to show "ERROR!".
Every once in a while a student in our program at ISU would intentionally chose Courier as a font for a design project and the professor would have a discussion with them that it's such a bad choice it looks like a technical error.
It was actually the lightweight version of courier that was that error font, maybe even looks worse than bold.
