There's a severe solar storm right now, which is why our KP will get up to about 8.00; there are even going to be some visible in Alabama.

Any tips for places to view near Ankeny? Sounds like tonight could be a good opportunity. Also, is there an expected peak time?
At an hour away, there are a few opportunities between Ogden and Pilot Mound. Closer in? Maybe Chichaqua Bottoms and northward. Look for cemeteries, parks, etc.

Yup, down here in the Laplands (bottom tier of counties, Iowa), very visible a few minutes ago, white streaks, red, blue, green.

Very clear and bright right now in Ames. Great viewing from my back yard.

Thanks for the warning! Got some sweet pictures

Finally got my kids down - we stopped to look quick on our way home - by the time I got outside they were INSANE. I gasped when I walked out, it was seriously pink and green. Very visible, strongest I've ever seen. The last dark photo is my phone camera with no filter or night mode, it was visible even then.

I'm on the north side of Johnston and don't see anything. I'm bummed seeing all of these photos.

Gotta do night mode or something else to increase light and slow shutter speed

There’s not much out anymore. I was outside an hour and a half ago (far west end of Urbandale), and they were clearly visible. Drove north a bit and it was even better. I wouldn’t have known if my sister hadn’t texted me though.

(inside Ankeny city limits -- too much ambient light :( )
Granted I’m toward the edge of town, but when I looked out my kitchen window at 3 AM and could see well-defined pillars, I knew this thread would have some action. Well done folks. I’ll regret not making a venture into the hinterlands, but it just wasn’t in the cards.

Interesting coincidence. I live in rural WV in the radio observatory quiet zone. Never have received more than two radio stations and one of those is weak. But, this morning I counted at least 20 strong signals. Wonder if transmission towers amped up to compensate.
