Is this years' team better than we thought?

Duh!
I hope People are tempering their expectations. This is a good team but has the second level of the defense decimated. Once again, this program is overachieving so don’t go nuts when we regress to the mean.

Right and I hear you. We cannot take anyone for granted. If the higher-ups wanna throw pixie dust on our season, and it is
THE season to remember, great! More power to us. We'll take it.

On the other hand... no guarantees.

We are not overachieving through the first 4 games. If anything, our offense is underachieving.

At what point does the “overachieving” become the mean?
When the opposition improves and the success continues. Other than Iowa this team has faced some good lower level teams/bad same level teams. Gotta prove it against tougher teams.

This sounds pessimistic, but I actually continue to be optimistic. Gonna enjoy the ride...

Updating this throughout the weeks to see how bad I am at predicting lol:

Iowa State (4-0) 20 - Houston (1-4) 0

Baylor (2-3): Baylor comes back but falls short against BYU (I was so close). The Bears come into a fired up Jack Trice Stadium and start off strong but end up dwindling. Cyclones win and cover. Iowa State 30 - Baylor 13

@ West Virginia (2-3): West Virginia will lose in Stillwater this week as OSU will be coming off a loss in Manhattan last week. This is going to be a tough one, but the Mountaineers will be in their gauntlet of their season in playing KU, OSU, ISU and KSU 4 games straight. Iowa State goes into Morgantown and steals a close one in a barn burner. Iowa State 38 - West Virginia 35

UCF (4-2): UCF comes off a win against Cincinnati but runs into John Heacock and company. Still predicting a sloppy game here where Iowa State grinds out a win. Iowa State 17 - UCF 14

Texas Tech (6-2): Tech loses this week to Arizona and then wins back to back games coming to Ames for a sold out undefeated Iowa State on homecoming. Iowa State rolls under the lights. Iowa State 31 - Texas Tech 10

Kansas (2-6): At the beginning of the year, KU was talked about as a team that's going to compete for a conference title. That has been the opposite as they've looked poor so far. They come into this game losing 6 of 7 and are demoralized. Changing things up here! Iowa State 38- Kansas 10

Cincinnati (5-4): This is going to be the toughest game on Cincinnati's schedule. It's in Ames against a rolling Cyclones squad. Iowa State embarrasses the Bearcats. Changing the score to reflect Cincy's offense. Iowa State 41 - Cincinnati 24

#15 Utah (8-2): I'm not even sure Cam Rising is even on their roster at this point. And his right throwing hand surely is a bigger injury than most thought. That obviously doesn't matter because he'll take the magic elixor potion that heals all top players before facing the Cyclones. Utah loses one more before they catch a red hot top 10 Iowa State squad but win on a final field goal. Iowa State 17 - Utah 20

#14 Kansas State (9-2): Kansas State comes into Ames at night in a game to go to the Big 12 Championship. No snow in this one, but Iowa State wins in a high scoring back and forth shootout. Iowa State 40 - Kansas State 38
Iowa State (4-0) 20 - Houston (1-4) 0

Iowa State (5-0) 43 - Baylor (2-4) 21

@ West Virginia (3-2): West Virginia ends up wrecking OSU and sets up a big one. Will the injuries be what holds the Cyclones back in this one? I don't think so. Iowa State goes into Morgantown and steals a close one in a barn burner. Iowa State 38 - West Virginia 35

UCF (3-3): UCF comes in struggling and it carries over into a cold night in Ames. No longer predicting a sloppy victory. Iowa State 40 - UCF 14

#15 Texas Tech (7-1): Tech comes into Ames on a 6 game for a sold out undefeated Iowa State on homecoming. Iowa State rolls under the lights. Iowa State 34 - Texas Tech 17

Kansas (1-7):
At the beginning of the year, KU was talked about as a team that's going to compete for a conference title. That has been the opposite as they've looked poor horrible so far. They come into this game losing 7 straight and are demoralized. Iowa State 38- Kansas 13

Cincinnati (5-4): This is going to be the toughest game on Cincinnati's schedule. Iowa State embarrasses the Bearcats. Iowa State 41 - Cincinnati 17

Utah (7-3): Changing things up here. I don't think Cam Rising sees the field until maybe the ISU game and I think Utah drops two more before the Cyclones come to town. However, I think they get behind their QB and give Iowa State the first loss of the season.

Pre-season, I think a lot of fans looked at our schedule and thought if this team is what we think it is, we could very realistically start 5-0 and then the schedule gets harder. If we win this week then I'll really drink the kool-aid, at that point you are 6-0, favored in every remaining game, and with at least three of those games where you'd be really disappointed to lose, the expected floor is 9-3 which is the most wins regular-season in school history.

We could seriously run the table the rest of the way.... BYU in the Championship game? That would be a thriller for just a casual fan!!!

If the Big 12 Championship is ISU-BYU, the national narrative will be ~ look how mid the Big 12 is, Kansas State and Utah couldn't even make the championship game, what a poverty conference.

If the SEC Championship is A&M-LSU, the national narrative will be ~ look how deep the SEC is, Bama and Georgia and Texas couldn't even make the championship game, what a meat grinder.

Ames Iowa
The team is jelling on offense and the defense starts slow, makes great halftime adjustments and then they go out and shut down the opposing offense the 2nd half.

This team has yet to play great for four quarters on both sides of the ball, the talent is there to do it, we are not relying on just one running back, it more whoever has it tonight is going to get the carries, Becht is really been great the past couple of weeks of taking what the defense gives him, and when he gets someone wide open, he guts them with a strike.

Keep it one game at a time, keep improving each week, and moving up the rankings, and then at the end, see where we are.
