Is your house haunted?

So because I have calls for the next 1.5 hours and feel brave, back to stories. I'm sure I've told this here before.

We have a very old family farm, like Civil War old. The current barns/main house were built around turn of the century. It's been passed down father to son. A couple generations ago, my dad's grandpa - who loved the farm - was born on it - told my dad he wasn't feeling well and went to lay down in a room in the barn. And then - IDK the details, he had a stroke or heart attack and passed, in the barn. This was before my mom (and kids obviously) entered the picture.

Flash forward about 25 years and my family was now moving to the farm. As there often is, there was a LOT of family feuding as one generation moved in and the older moved out. It was deeply acrimonious and most of those relationships have never recovered. Essentially, my grandparents are ********. Anyway, high stress times on the farm. Lots of verbal fights. At this point, my mom usually went out in the mornings to start farm chores. She'd bring the cows into the barn (stanchion barn), and start prepping. Over the first year - more common in the winter when the cows were already in the barn - she later commented to me and my cousin - that she'd sometimes see an older man in the barn. Walking down the front alley in front of the cows and disappear into a feed room. She kind of figured it was a ghost of the grandpa because that was the room he died in. She said it never happened once she let the dogs out which sometimes she did right away, sometimes a bit later. And - being a stanchion barn - she could see the cows sort of step back a bit. You don't get this unless you're familiar with these kind of barns but the animals will sort of move back down the line as a person walks by. So it seemed like the cows saw this... apparition as well.

So anyway. That happens on and off, she doesn't really say much about it. In the barn, we have a bunch of old coats hanging up in one spot, only which 1-2 ever get used. But one time, we had to pull them all down to do whitewashing. They were all laid out somewhere and my mom asked about one particular old coat buried amongst the others. My dad said that was his grandpa's coat he used to wear to do barn chores.

The sightings stopped about a year after we moved in and she hasn't mentioned seeing anything since.

Also my mom once rented a place that had laundry in the basement and she hated it. The basement felt malevolent is what she said. Did laundry in middle of the day, avoided being there at night. After she moved out she found out there had been a double murder - maybe a murder suicide? In that basement. Soooooooo I felt relieved when she walked around our new house and was like "feels good".

Not exactly sure.
yup, the room you would walk in to from the front door is what was used. Nice little cut out where the casket would sit.
When I was about 23-24, a friend of mine (classmate nerd #2) told he he went to the visitation of classmate (nerd #1 who is a nuclear physicist on a navy submarine) for his grandpa. Was at the classmates dads house and as he walked in he was stunned to see grandpa in his casket on the porch. So even up into the 1990s people were doing it.

My sister in law heard a noise in the middle of the night not sure what it was that woke her up. She went to check on her son and saw an old woman in 1800's black dress white frilly collar bending over looking at the bed. When she approached the woman turned, walked away and disappeared. She then found a live bat laying on her son's pillow with him.

We looked at a historic home. Wife and I assumed from the beginning that we'd have ghosts.

The basement layout was....I'm not sure what it could've been used for other than killin' or hiding slaves. (Both?)

Great location. I liked the place, other than the basement, but it was built in the 1800s. Of course there's a level of death and hauntin' that comes with the old world charm

When I lived out in VA my GF's townhouse was haunted. One night we were watching a movie in the downstairs living room and you could hear heavy feet walking at a really fast pace the entire length of the unit. I grabbed a frying pan and headed upstairs lol but as soon as I started up the stairs it stopped. The real kicker is that both of the bed room doors upstairs were closed so nothing could have went end to end through the unit like what we heard. This happened fairly frequently. One time this happened when her roommates boyfriends dog was upstairs and it pushed through the screen window (window was open) and climbed out on the roof. One other time I was coming down the stairs in the middle of the night to get some water and I could hear someone typing on the computer keyboard. I assumed the roommate was there as she worked odd hours but I come around the corner and the chair is empty but the screensaver was off like someone had just been using the computer. There were definitely other things that happened to both my GF and her roommate.

Before my dad bought the farm I grew up on, the people who lived there prior had a child die in the yard.

There were times when I could sense something when out and about.

My wife has a couple stories that she's shared with me. First, she's not like full blown psychic, but she gets weird feelings/premonitions from time to time and she's really good at finding anything I've hidden from her like my private candy stash or presents I've gotten her. In other words, she has a little je ne sais quoi. She's had a couple experiences seeing ghosts/spirits/whatever over the years, usually in the middle of the night when she gets up to get a snack (she's a notorious night eater). She says she sort of gets a feeling when it's going to happen and "knows" it's not a person, but can't really explain how.

Anyway, about a year ago she tells me she's seen this guy in our apartment a couple of times over the course of a week or so. He's a younger-ish guy, maybe 30s, and he's not really doing anything, he's just sort of there. He looks familiar, but can't quite place him like she's seen him before but it isn't someone she really knows. A few days later, we find out one of our neighbors on the floor below us passed in his apartment. Through talking to some of the other neighbors, she was able to figure out his name and looked him up. Sure enough, he matched the description she gave a few days earlier. She saw him a couple more times over the next few months, but it's been awhile.

Bought an old 1860's farmhouse. It has since been renovated a few times, but there is a room in the basement that is original where we have our gym. Occasionally the treadmill will turn on, and you can hear the loud beep. Im sure this is more than likely faulty wiring but wife and i joke that it is a ghost.

Not sure what creeps me out more, the fact that we may have a ghost, or the fact that the ghost is clearly in better shape than i am

A newly built house would seem to be fine up until you murder someone there. ;)

Well, unless someone died during construction.

I'd have picked up my son, walked out the door and tossed a match over my shoulder on the way out.

George Washington Carver would stay in our house when he'd visit Simpson and we have some cool old pictures of him on our porch. Somehow, my kids have twisted that into our house being haunted by the "peanut guy". They're convinced he haunts it.

My child hood church was... and I'm not sure about a few other places. I don't think my house was although my mom used to half heartedly joke about the ghost. Or at least I think she was joking

Now that's a really special thing to have in your family history.

we have an unhealthy separation from aging/death in our culture.

To this day I have a dream of there being a portal to hell in the basement of the house I grew up in. When I go home I am scared to this day of going into that room!

Local priest was asked to go bless this house in Boone. Owner’s were having this old home remodeled. One day, workers refused to go into the house. They told the owners it was haunted. Priest went over and started blessing each room. He went into the basement and saw this black cloud hovering above him. He stayed calm and went about blessings with holy water. He said the cloud all of the sudden moved up the stairs and just dissipated. Said it was the most bizarre thing he’d ever seen.
Is your house the same as the Boone house? Or two stories?
