The argument Iowa fans are trying to make is that we played a really weak schedule so that's the only reason we had a good year (reminds me of the various narratives they had after the covid season). The response is depending on what metric you use to rank teams, at worst our strength of schedule is similar to what they have been in the last handful of years (in the 60s) and at best we played a harder schedule than them and many of the highly ranked teams (Sagarin ISU #38 and Iowa #48).

Strength of Record (SOR) isn't really a good argument because A. They won't understand it. B. Its a metric that tries to rank teams and their performance, not just how hard of a schedule they played.

The other good argument is that their strength of schedule would be absolutely terrible this season except for two things, that they played us and playing/getting dominated by Ohio State.

Here is the only rebuttal: SOS doesn't matter and anybody that tells you it does is lying to you or is ignorant.

You need to win. You need to go 11-1. How you get there doesn't matter.

Indiana, Boise St, and SMU are all considered somewhat locks for the CFP.

Indiana SOS: 60 in Massey, 65 FPI, best win... 7-5 Michigan, the only team they've beaten with a winning record
Boise St. SOS: 73 in Massey, 86 FPI, best win... @UNLV
SMU SOS: 63 in Massey, 75 in FPI, best win, @L'ville or @Duke

It's true. But TV partners allow some conferences to schedule accordingly regarding this fact, and not others. This is exactly what Chris Kleiman was talking about in the presser last week.

In a world where getting the best teams into a limited playoff despite variances in record, this would be a critical factor. But it has been proven not to be, because the CFP only wants the appearance of a clear championship vehicle.

Duh!
Tell them that we finally had a SOS not in the top 5 or even top 10 and won 10 games with a SOS similar to their recent history. This 10 win season thing isn't that hard apparently, when not facing a top 10 SOS every year. ;)

We need to play 8 conference games and have teams spread out at least one or two non con games so we have conference games throughout most of the year.

Probably that team out of Ohio that started an all out brawl after suffering a giant L
I just gotta ask if a team would of planted their flag at mid field after they beat ISU in a big rival game, what would of happened.? Don't get me wrong, I think both teams were wrong and I would be fine with anyone who threw a punch be suspended for one game, even if it meant their career was over. This is probably a different thread, so sorry.

SOS is not great for Sagarin is. Also while we don't have an elite win and do have a 5-7 team as a loss... we also beat

Baylor (8)
K State (8)
Iowa (8)
Tech (8)
Ark State (7)
West Virginia (6)

We've beat 6 bowl teams and 8 teams at least 5-7. 9 if you count North Dakota who turned out to not be that great.

Presuming we beat AZ State, that also would give us a 10 win opponent and 7 of 11 against bowl teams. Were any of them elite teams? No, probably not. But that's not a weak schedule its just an average one

Here are the current composite BCS Computer Rankings (no human polls) for Colley, Billingsley, Sagarin, Anderson & Hester, Wolfe and Massey. They are a combination of predictive and resume based rankings and frankly should be the #1 tool used by the CFP Committee. As noted below, all 2-loss B12 teams are ahead of Boise. It is absurd that the Committee is justifying Boise getting a CFP bye with solely one close road loss to the #1 team:

1 Oregon
2 Texas
3 Notre Dame
4 Ohio St
5 Penn St
6 Georgia
7 SMU
8 Indiana
9 Alabama
10 Tennessee
11 South Carolina
12 Iowa St
13 Miami (FL)
14 BYU
15 Mississippi
16 Arizona St
17 Boise St
18 Clemson
19 LSU
20 Michigan
21 Missouri
22 Louisville
23 Colorado
24 Illinois
25 Texas A&M
26 Kansas St
27 Syracuse
28 UNLV
29 Florida
30 Army
31 Duke
32 Baylor
33 Texas Tech
34 Tulane
35 Iowa

Just tell EIU fans that we finally had a B10 West type of schedule, just like they have had for the past decade and we beat them at their place. Their entire board is nothing but an outhouse of hate for anyone not named the Squawks.

Why isn't ISU playing for a Conference title AND having a shot at making the first-ever college football playoffs "good for the state"? Seems like I heard that argument about Clark.

Its great for the state and ISU, but its the last thing in the world that EIU fans want to happen. They are figuring out that their safety blanket of playing in the B10 West is now gone, they got away with it this year only playing one of the 4 teams that finished ahead of them in the standings, and next year they get most of those schools for the first time. They know that Freerents is entering the end of his career and with ISU starting to get a foothold, in state recruits, that they have always been able to pick and choose from, will start looking more at ISU for the first time in a long time. Not since Mac and Freerents first couple of years has ISU been in a place where we can become the dominate team in the state, and they become the next Nebraska, struggling to get 6 wins to get to a bowl. But at least they will have plenty of money to finish 10th in the conference.

So barring conference title game results that force a reshuffle the only discrepancy between this and the likely CFP poll is swapping in Boise State for Iowa State as the #4 seed?

Meaningless, but I ran the ESPN simulation way too many times last night. ISU got the #4 by virtue of a Clemson win over SMU most iterations (if I recall correctly ESPN gives ISU a 66% chance of a bye if they beat ASU).

ISU also reached the semifinal from the #4 and #12 what seemed like nearly half the time despite long odds. It almost has me hoping for a matchup with Oregon.

Yes, South Carolina and Miami would be the first teams out. Tennessee and Bama last teams in. Things get crazy if Clemson beats SMU.

Go Rebels!
