I need a truck with an extended bed for work. I won’t be buying that ugly looking truck thing that’s for sure. I’m hoping to get at least another 3 years out of my 2019 Nissan XL diesel. After that, I’ll see what advancements have been made. I’m not a, screw electric! Or fossil fuels only! I’m for advancements and if something works for me that is electric, so be it.
This is such a reasonable and refreshing take.

EVs make all the sense in the world for some (it’s a perfect fit for our second car) and simply would not work for others.

People bashing electric cars in general because they don’t fit their personal needs is like someone bashing living in a condo because they’ve got 4 kids and want a big yard. It’s perfect for some and not for others.

Long box might exclude you from known EV pickups, but hybrid pickup long box options may exist now/in the near future? Unsure on that one.

I think the insistence that there is a one size fits all situation more often comes from the advocates of EVs though. Maybe that's just me.

I think both extreme sides of the argument are illogical and emotional.

Villainizing Someone for driving gas or diesel with a long commute in an area with limited charging and/or someone that needs a heavy duty truck is dumb.

So are people that are just anti-EV.

I see both sides, but - in my personal experience - it’s more the EV haters that are just unhinged about the topic.

People surely have different experiences. Probably based in part on where they live.

Nearly everyone that has owned an EV, has also owned an ICE vehicle. A large majority of those with opinions on EV's have never owned one.

It's similar to my 19 year old and single niece giving her thoughts on what it takes to have a successful marriage.

Very well stated. Have never thought of it that way but you’re entirely correct.

Your owning an EV says nothing about it's appropriateness for anyone else. This is exactly what I am talking about. I'm glad you like it though. What are you driving?

This is also entirely true.

My only response would be that a lot of EV haters base their feelings (1) not at all on whether or not it would work for them and (2) with no personal experience.

It’s driven largely by politics - almost a religious thing.

Not saying this applies to you. Just a general observation.

My wife has a Tesla Model Y and I drive a Kia Telluride. I've owned 20+ vehicles in my life from nearly every manufacture and nearly every style (no convertibles yet).I've mentioned multiple times that EV's are not for everyone. For example, if you can't charge at home I'd never buy one. If I had to drive over 250 miles on a regular basis (weekly), I wouldn't get one. If your only purpose is to save money, I wouldn't get one.

But EV owners can usually identify non EV owners by their concerns. For example, they say things like "I don't have any chargers near my house". Or they start bringing up environmental impacts of batteries.

this drives me nuts. how people become such sheep that they basically say "well, the politician I voted for says I should/should not buy an EV so I have to listen".

I cannot fathom a scenario where I'm so stupid that I base what type of car I buy or not based on what ANY freakin' lying politician told me to do.

FWIW - I have a hybrid and I love it. Would never say never to an EV. I'm just waiting for the infrastructure, price, and technology to be appropriate for me to trust in it 100%. It'll get there in the not to distance future, imo.

At risk of this getting sent to the cave this behavior seems much more prevalent on one side of the spectrum than the other.

I see the exact opposite of that, as someone who doesn't own an EV -- it's ICE hardliners demanding all EVs meet every possible situation, and then claiming they are all bad if they don't. Typical denial of new tech stuff, maybe some of them still have dial-up internet and a landline phone, too. And, it primarily stems from this on the backside, from conversations I've had:

Gets lumped in with the climate crowd and blah blah blah instead of just taking a technological advancement/opportunity at face value. Just like all other things in existence, it's all situational. It's okay to not have one.

I'm always amused by the lack of self reflection required when people point fingers reflexively at politics.

I'm not interested in a push to make this about Cave stuff so I'll just show myself out.

Do you not think politics impacts people’s views on EVs?

Politics had zero impact on our purchase. It didn't make a difference in the end, but it does feel good buying the most American made (content and production) vehicle in the world.

A nice externality.

I wasn’t initially considering an EV when we bought our first Tesla. Then I borrowed a friend’s Model S and was blown away

The first manufacturer to treat cars as Tech (back in 2014)

Granted, legacy manufacturers have caught up to a large degree, especially the Kia group.

But if you subscribe to a IoT/IoE future, it was easy to see it’s the future, albeit still facing nascent technology obstacles

I think most people's political views are predictable and tiresome. People always want to inject others' political views into their reasoning, but it's often just a tell how motivated by politics they really are. Nothing personal, it just gets in the way of any decent discussion as a means of invalidating someone's views on any subject. Boring.

Painting with a broad brush is typical in these debates. Sometimes though fault is with the width of brush, not the paint.

Actually it does. I can name about 5 different situations right away of people who shouldn't have them.

It's almost unheard of to hear people say EVs fit everyone. It's a LOT more prevalent for people to say EVs will never work. This thread is a perfect example of that. And the anti crowd just shouts loud enough to drown everyone else out.

Friendly reminder to all: never, ever, ever rent an EV.

I own one but have never rented. Usually because I’m unsure of charging availability at hotels.

Have you had a negative experience? Interested to hear more.
