Would you be upset if the national anthem was no longer played at sporting events? I've heard a lot of people say they wish performers would just get it overwith to get to the games. What's your thoughts?

You could say the same thing about any part of the pre-game pageantry.

Should it be played at the Olympics? That's also a competition event.

Not exactly sure.
I generally enjoy it as kind of a formal introduction to the event. I don't know how it got connected to sporting events though, and I guess I don't know that it would be some huge loss if it ended.

It's at it's best at college football games when the band is playing it.
When I was in HS, for football it was like the calm before the storm. A chance to split from warm ups to go time. I could amp myself in up about 2 seconds so for me it was good. Basketball and other sports it was generally played before the girls or JV games so I wasn't on the court for it, so it was a little non event then.

Testifying
I get it when its like the Olympics medal ceremony.
I question why we play it when the players, coaches are still in the locker room at Hilton.
Even this last Saturday, the Gameday people were disassembling the ESPN desk and rolling it across the court while it was being played.

Should be reserved for USA National Team events -- World championships, Olympics, etc.

But if you're going to keep it, it must be performed in 90 seconds or less. Anything longer means there's too much added ******** and "look at how great I am" elements included.

Pep bands are usually good for 1:10-1:15. There was a group of ladies (Kuhlman? sisters, IIRC) that almost always knocked that thing out in 1:00-1:05 when they did it in Hilton.

That's wrong, IMO. Anytime I'm going to a game and I hear it, I will stop and see if I can see a flag, if not, I look to the east since that is what my color guard dad told me.

Doesn't Vegas have a betting line on how long it takes to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl?

The Star Spangled Banner didn't even become the national anthem until the 1930's and before that it was sporadically played at sporting events. Like most things it took off during World War 2 for solidarity to the war effort.

I'm talking any game, not just the SB, High school, college, races..........

Can you give examples of events you mean then?

I guess, even its not the only reason it’s played, It’s a good indicator things are about to start.

I figured High School events would be enough. High school football, high school basketball, the same for college, Indy, NASCAR and even dirt track races, rodeos. It's played before nearly every sporting event from high school up.

It's cool at hockey games when they play Oh Canada and the crowd is really into it of when the Blackhawks do it. Don't really care either way though.

if it is not played at games, then when will we get to sing it?

I think the pledge of allegiance should be said every morning to start the school day, and the anthem should be sung at sporting events.

It is a grim reminder of the sacrifices made so that Americans can enjoy a football game with their families free from fear, a hotdog, and a beer.,

Of course, I am ex-military, so my view, which was once shared by all, may now be in the minority.
