I wonder what the players think? They can read the mad ramblings of Cyclone fanatic's thoughts on this...

You don't have to be plugged in to say Indiana should have TJ at the top of their list. I'm sure he is near the top. No one is reporting that TJ is actually interested in the job. There is no point in TJ responding to every media list of coaching candidates he shows up on. That's going to happen a lot.
I agree with all that but it's interesting May addressed it. This is also only the second job I can think of that Otz has been floated for, so I wouldn't say it's pointless to ever ask him about openings. Kentucky had about everyone who's ever won 20 games on their list, so it made more sense for Iowa reporters to ignore, and for Otz to not waste breath on it

Disagree, 5 firings or force outs in 18 years points to a demand to win early that has not been offset by higher levels of funding. ISU's tournament success has been very similar to Indiana's, but does not come with a cloud of termination following one about. Mac left town before things got that far, and Prohm was the only other. In my obviously biased view, Iowa State is as good a basketball job as there is in this country without being a blue blood. The ONLY THING to really knock it for, is donor support, and part of the problem with that is ISU fans have come to EXPECT that they can get more for less in Ames. Obviously in the NIL age, that has changed. TJ hasn't been dinged by that here so far, but you never know.
I’m not certain this is true. There were several Portal players that TJ wanted these past couple years and didn’t get almost solely due to NIL. And while the whole situation with Hunter ultimately turned out to be “good” for Iowa State, TJ didn’t want to lose him after his first season.

To TJ’s credit, he was able to secure this years Portal class with the NIL budget we had (and keep the current roster).

This upcoming spring is going to be really interesting…

They haven't been beyond the Sweet 16 since the Mike Davis team that went to the Final Four while LE was still here.
The team that went to the title game wasn't even that good they just got hit at the right time. Kelvin Sampson's second year they were 22-4 and in the top 10 when he got in trouble. Before that you'd have to go back to like 92 when Calbert Cheney played

Indiana message board is saying TJ is signing another extension even though he just signed one. Wonder if it a raise and a bigger buyout or what the deal is. Think they said some guy named Tilley. Not sure if he has good sources or not

Tavern Hoks worried that Indiana might hire Ben McCollum from Drake and they are stuck with that lunatic McCaffrey. DeVries isn’t going to Iowa either.

Sounds like there is more of a willingness to bring in Beard

Could be not good feedback from a couple of top candidates

While it’s fun to laugh at the certainty of burners, I will say I’m still concerned. The new contract just doesn’t make sense. If it were a signal that he’s here to stay, why was the release of the details delayed? CW said he didn’t even have them, it wasn’t that he was sitting on them. ISU fans can look at it as Otz deserved a raise regardless of national job vacancies, and negotiated a lower buyout as a warning that he needs sufficient support, and while he doesn’t want to leave, if support is insufficient it’ll force his hand. IU fans can look at it as he agreed to IU in principle and cut them a deal with the buyout, since he holds all the cards with ISU. And I can’t say they’re crazy

Wait are you suggesting TJ renegotiated the deal with a lower buyout, which happened in December, because he had already agreed to become IU’s new head coach, even though they’re current coach hadn’t been fired yet?

I think the fact Pollard got extended, changes things a bit. The fact there is a 2 tier buyout higher if Pollard is the AD vs not the AD.

That to me is the telltale sign.

ISU got bargain as far as salary it seems, and TJ got a lower buyout. Compromise perhaps. Contract does not bind one to the other if college athletics goes down some unexpected path

I believe the lower buyout has to do with NIL. I don't completely understand, but my understanding is that by lowering the buyout the school has less liability and therefore can feel better about spending money on NIL. The part I don't understand is that I thought that the buyout when firing a coach was the full length of the remaining contract and the buyout we often talk about is what the new school has to pay you if your coach takes another job.

I'm pretty sure the Quad City newspaper got the details of the contract. That's why we know the buyout is 4 million.

Usually contract details don't come out until a news organization submits a Freedom of Information Act request and it gets completely processed. It's pretty common that that happens months after a contract extension is announced.
