Lew was just playing a song in an ad for a two-night show in Iowa City called 69 Love Songs. The voice was deep and indifferent to pitch, kinda slow & grumbly. I told him that if that was a sample, it was a hard pass for me. He started reading the comment section. One of comments was "music to *ahem* your wrists by". It was pretty apt. :(

Mrs. Velo and I went for a walk there last Friday. Our count - beyond the usual large number of squirrels, ducks, geese and other common small birds - 2 nesting swans, 1 deer, 1 sandhill crane, 1 weasel or river otter*. Still no sighting of our bear.

*We weren't sure what the mammal was but it certainly appeared too large for even a large long tailed weasel. It was also just a few feet from a good sized lake so that suggests otter over weasel.
Was it a Mink? Would be larger than a weasel and smaller than an otter.

For anyone that has ever had to remove a dead critter from under your deck, just know that I now feel your pain. Opossums stink when they are alive,. Dead, it's like the 9th layer of hell just opened under my deck.
We get that around here occasionally. Last summer we had to convince a couple of young raccoons that living under the decking of our hot tub was a bad idea. Every hole we filled, they dug another. We finally live trapped them to get them away from our property.
We've had a few critters die under the various levels of deck. It's really bad when they find their way up under the addition. You're belly-crawling under there to get things out of there - very little space. The company that services our hvac units has to send their skinny guy to do the servicing under that room (it has its own hvac, separate from the rest of the house).

The damn thing crawled up as close to the house as it could and as far away from any of the sides as possible. Had to unscrew a deck board that had 10 screws in it. Drill was dead, so ratcheting screw drivers had to do the job. Then we couldn't get the board all the way removed as trim from the siding we recently had installed was covering the final 2 screws. Luckily we could lift the board and get it out. Had to go back in to grab some pieces that had sloughed off. Then nuked the whole area with disinfectant. Hoping this will discourage any of the bunnies from going under there for a while.

Goes to my nieces worry that I will end up in a nursing home and get poor care because I have no family within 400 miles. She's a physical therapist and observes that patients without frequent visitors get observable lesser care. :(

My mother was semi-comatose for a number of years and her good friend, much younger lady, went and got a CNA to work their parttime to keep tabs on things. This gal was already working a full time job in a factory. About the best friend my mother ever had and maybe didn't know it at all.
Nursing home? I think you'll end up in the fine cheeses section of Byerly's.

A mink? Probably smuggled in by one of the Russian/Belorussian families that live about 2 blocks from us.

Could it be a muskrat? Or is that just a critter made up by Captain and Tenille?
Muskrats are fat little fellers more akin to a beaver or a groundhog (woodchuck), but with the tell-tale 'rat tail'.

So it, in fact, did not walk or quack like a duck.
No it did not. If we could have been really creative and had some time we could have got a shot with the mammal in the foreground and the swans, a Canada goose and maybe a mallard in the background all in the same shot. But I doubt everyone would have stayed still for us that long.
