Not really, actually. For its size, they haven't produced much talent at all in the past 10 years.

Omaha doesn't compare with metro areas in states like TX, LA, or FL when it comes to recruits and the quality of football played. I maintain, however, that it is a step ahead of comparable midwest metro areas such as Minneapolis, Kansas City, and Des Moines when it comes to per capita football talent.

Really?

I would say that ...

Jon Banks WR (Papillion-La Vista) Iowa State
Stevie Hicks RB (Creighton Prep) Iowa State
Nick Leaders DT (Millard West) Iowa State
JaMaine Billups S (Omaha Central) Iowa State
Phillip Bates QB(Omaha North) ISU/Ohio
Niles Paul WR (Omaha North) Nebraska
Sean Fisher LB (Millard North) Nebraska
Collins Okafor LB (Omaha Westside) Nebraska
Mike Caputo OL (Millard North) Nebraska
D.J. Jones OL (Omaha Central) Nebraska
Alex Henery K (Omaha Burke) Nebraska
Ricky Henry OL (Omaha Burke) Nebraska
Zach Potter (Creighton Prep) Nebraska
Cortney Grixby CB (Omaha Central) Nebraska
Tierre Green S (Omaha Benson) Nebraska
Titus Adams DT (Creighton Prep) Nebraska
Ira Cooper LB (Omaha Westside) Nebraska
Mike Erickson OL (Papillion-La Vista) Nebraska
Judd Davies FB (Millard North) Nebraska
Wilson Thomas WR (Omaha North) Nebraska
Eric Crouch QB (Millard North) Nebraska
Shaun Prater CB (Omaha Central) Iowa
Adam Shada S (Millard North) Iowa
Seth Olsen OL (Millard North) Iowa
Allan Evridge QB (Papillion-La Vista) Kansas State
Tim Biere TE (Omaha Westside) Kansas
Trevor Robinson OL (Elkhorn) Notre Dame
Harland Gunn OL (Omaha Central) Miami
Kyle Dooley OL (Papillion-La Vista) TCU

... is a pretty decent list of talent. I'm sure I missed some too.

It's not like the Omaha metro is Dallas or Houston. Christ, there are more students in those areas than people in Nebraska.

It is nice to have some commits flowing in. The only downside is none are DTs or DEs. As was posted previously, we desperately need some!
Some have the size, frame and potential to grow into DL. This is something Iowa has done well and we should take note (damn that hurt to say). They take tweener kids and grow them into good to great players. They take bigger/slower safeties and grow them into LBs. They take bigger/slower LBs and grow them into DT/DEs. That is how they built the program and had success. Now that they have been successful they can get the next tier of athletes. just look at their current DL. I may be wrong but most have made position changes since they were Fresh.

Angerer was a 6'0" 200 pound(not exactly big 10 size) LB recruit. AJ Edds was a TE recruit (Purdue looked at him for LB). Klug was a MLB or DL recruit, as were King and Kroul. Ballard was recruited as a TE with potential to play OL or DL/DE. Binns was a LB that Iowa recruited to play DE. It is just crazy to look at their defensive roster. They take "football players" find a spot for them and develop them. that is exactly what we need to do.

SPOT ON assessment....

To me, thats exactly what our staff is doing...recruiting tweeners or slightly off ideal size. IMO i will take a faster 6'-0 200 lb'er then i would a taller 6'3 200 lb'er....

Get athletes, then find a place for them.....thats the biggest difference when we play top tier teams, overall athleticism....

I think if you look at the offensive side of the ball we are doing the same thing. I may be wrong but when TT was building their program, they didn't have many Michael Crabtrees. Instead they had a bunch of waterbug type receivers that made plays after the catch. Once successful, they can pull in some of the bigger faster receivers as well.

For what it's worth, Jehvon Miller is listed as a DE on the ESPN recruiting site - ESPN.com: Jevohn Miller. I have agood feeling about the growth potential of both of the LBs and I also think that Brakens has the frame to grow into a great Weak Side Linebacker with plus speed.

Hopefully some of these guys can grow into a position on the DL but that's a couple years down the road and we need some big bodies who are ready to go in 2011:

29 Parker, Rashawn DE 6-0 250 RSr.
85 Johnson, Bailey DL 6-2 279 RSr.
96 Alburtis, Austin DL 6-2 269 RSr.
26 Mansfield, Taylor DE 6-1 253 RSr.
91 Neal, Patrick DE 6-0 227 RJr.
98 Black, Jerrod DL 6-0 279 RJr.
97 Ruempolhamer, Stephen DL 6-3 280 Jr.
38 Maggitt, Roosevelt DE 6-1 242 RSo.
90 Laing, Cleyon DE 6-3 266 RSo.
94 McDonough, Jake DL 6-5 270 RSo.
53 Jacobs, Joe DL 5-11 235 RSo.
95 Woods III, Walter DL 6-0 297 RFr.
50 Scott, Willie DE 6-1 214 RFr.
93 Moore, Aaron DE 6-2 244 RFr.
74 Kingston, Tyler DL 6-3 280 Fr.

We have some experience returning THIS YEAR but most of them are seniors. The junior class hasn't produced much so far (58 tackles, 2 career sacks) even though Neal and Ruemp saw extensive playing time last year. The sophomores haven't played much at all. The wildcard is the three redshirt freshmen; are any of these guys ready to make some noise come this fall?

Let's say the worst case scenario plays out meaning that Nelson is a bust, the 2011 recruiting class is light on big fellas and the redshirt freshmen aren't ready yet. That would mean the starters in 2011 would likely be Neal, Reump, McDonough and Maggitt with only 2 career sacks between them. The backups would be even bigger question marks. Let's hope it doesn't come down to that!

I've heard the same thing, but I don't understand why. As far I know, ISU isn't really near the 85 scholarship limit. Anyone know why the coaching staff is putting together a smaller class this year?
We only have 18 seniors scholarship players plus Haughton leaving. I think we are closer to the 85 limit than you think. We have had full classes the last few years and have had little attrition.

The thing that hurts more than anything is that the best DL prospect on our team has just been suspended(Aaron Moore). The kid was fantastic in HS, and is one of the strongest guys on the team. Or was until he was suspended.
