I don't understand why everyone worries about the 2 position having to be a pure shooter.

It has nothing to do with being a pure shooter. It has to do with our guards not being so completely 1 dimensional.

I wont be excited until we have a lineup of at least 4 multidimensional players.

Look the the 2s in the tourny. They hit shots with a guy in their face, they hit wide open shots, they can handle the ball, they can get to the hoop and finish. Every guard on this team does 1 of those OK. All I want is a 2 that can do 2 of those 4, for starters. How many open 3s did DG miss? How many layups did he miss? It the job of the 2 to get to the hoop and finish and hit 3s, if your 2 cannot do those why is he playing?

Most likely lineup:
DG
Lucca
Gilstrap
CB/JVB
Ham

I personally want to see less Lucca and more Boozer, Buckley, Colvin but I know that isn't an option with McD. Unless he makes drastic improvements to his overall game, Lucca is not effective as a starter and serves us better as a 6/7 guy.

I also hope JVB gets substantial minutes in his senior year. He is a B12 quality player and should be in the starting rotation with or without CB.

Why does everyone think DG will start at the 2? The guy struggle shooting the ball, that is kind of important when you are the shooting guard. Buck would be better at the 2, but Buck did handle the ball last year when he and DG were in the game, not sure what that means. We need a PG that can lead the team, push the ball, see the court, and make things happen. Whoever can do that should see the most mins.

winner winner chicken dinner......a shooting guard MUST be able to shoot. Until he proves that he should be on the bench for ISU to succeed. I am not overly impressed with his ball handling, he is too passive to attack the basket.

1. Buckley
2. Lucca/Boozer
3. Gilstrap
4. Brackins
5. Hamilton/VB

This is a lineup I like. We have to remember that Mac and the players know what they need to do. Lucca has been quoted as saying he will spend the off-season working on his ball handling. I think that on of our big men has to become a shot blocker. If we look at Aldrich of KU I believe Ham can be very similar. I'm not saying he will be as good only that he can be the same type of player. If our PG play can improve then we can have a good team. I don't care if he scores but I would like to see assists that make me say WOW. I think our teams will look much like Izzo's teams. You would have to admit he has done fairly well.

He was the only winner last night that didn't win in a blowout. I was thinking it was time to hold him accountable.

If we're gonna suck again we may as well throw Colvin in early and see if we can develop him as fast as possible.

As much as I WANT to do that. GMac can't afford to do that with the way our fans are. When we have so many that will complain about the number of wins, we have to put our best current product on the floor at all times. We can't try to build up our freshmen by putting them in the fire and risk losing any games due to rookie mistakes. Also, GMac is finally going to have some guys who have been with him for three years and hopefully we'll see some advantages from having experience with his system.

It can be the 2 or it can be the 3, but you have to have someone on the floor to keep defenders honest. If you're a defender on the wing you can't sag to help on dribble drives by the PG or double down on a 4 or 5. It makes all the difference in the world.

A good offense is all about spacing and movement. Keeping defenders honest and not letting them cheat opens passing lanes, driving lanes, and keeps a force like Brackins isolated in the post.

This is, of course, assuming that we're not going to be the most athletic team on the floor and that we're playing a half-court game instead of getting out and running.
Gilstrap shot 44.8% from three.

Hey you owe me a steak or something along those lines. I bet you early on in the season that Eikmeier would never shoot over 45% from 3's while at ISU. I was right!!
You were right.:notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

Here nor there
I agree that a 8-9 player rotation is best.
80 minutes for the 1 and 2 spots between DG, Buck, Colvin, and Scotty. Clearly Scott will see all his minutes as the 2, and most of DG and Bucks come at the 1. I don't see DG seeing too much time as a two, unless he or Buck, drastically becomes a better 3-ball shooter. As the season progresses, Buck takes more of DG's minutes, and Colvin takes some of Scott's.
40 minutes for the 3, mostly all from Gilstrap, but Lucca may see some time here. Perhaps when Gilstrap sits, we will go to a three guard line up, and DG sees a little time here.
If Brackins is back he will take 35 or so of the minutes for the 4/5, and the other 45 will be distributed between JVB, Dendy, Hamilton, depending on the situation.
That is 10 players, so if I had to guess, I would say Lucca is the odd man out. I am still high on Lucca, but his overall game needs to improve to the point he is not 1-D. I think on a good team he is a situational player, where some games he sees very limited minutes, others quite a few. Of course if Craig leaves Gilstrap may see sometime at the 4, allowing for Lucca to see more time at the 3.
I love Boozer's effort, but as far as basketball skills go, he is not even 1-D right now. I think his role will be similar to Lee's, more of a motivational attempt by McD when everyone else is going through the motions. Pomlee will hopefully have another year to refine his game before called upon. He should be a good player for us in the future if he hangs in there and keeps working hard.
DG 20-30 minutes
Buck 10-15 minutes
Colvin 10-15 minutes
Scott 20-30 minutes
Gilstrap 30 minutes
Brackins 35 minutes
Hamilton 15-20 minutes
JVB 15-20 minutes
Dendy 15-20 minutes

Brackins (if he returns) and Gilstrap need to be on the court 35+ minutes per games in close games. I am hoping Dendy will be the same, but the jury is still out. It's obvious he has the talent, the question is whether his motivation can be harnessed. I don't think we should be so down on the team coming up next year. McDermott's coaching is built around a team that can shoot the three. Gilstrap, Dendy, Brackins, Staigger, and JVB can all shoot the three. I am most worried about who is going to run the point. Colvin will struggle in the Big XII as a freshman, Garrett shot under 40% and struggled with turnovers, Bucklye I am undecided on. I hope Garrett can improve on his shot over the offseason. Hamilton played very well for someone who is still learning the game. No matter who runs the offense, the fact that both Dendy and Gilstrap can handle the ball will help them out. Lets hope that the open scholarship is used on someone who will be intense, hustling after lose balls and strong on the boards, doesn't have to be a scorer. I doubt we see Brackins next year, but if we do, I think the 09-10 season will be something special.

DG will not start at the 2! Can he shoot? NO! if brackins stays and this dendy kid is decent enough to beat out the rest of the forwards (which shouldnt be to hard) the lineup i think will look like this
Colvin/DG (i realize DG will start the season just because mcd. doesnt wanna screw him over) Buckley didnt impress me at all last season.
Lucca and christopherson or whatever his name is (probably wont play much because he reminds me to much of an eik. so maybe buck. can move in there.
Gilstrap
brackins
dendy our forwards will be smaller we dont have a TRUE center but they will be very athletic. Hamilton wont see much playing time.
so i would like to see colvin lucca gilstrap brackins dendy our team would finally start looking like a big 12 team with that line up.

To be fair, Stinson couldn't really shoot from deep either. He could drive and finish at the hoop. That being said, DG needs to learn how to finish at the hoop.

DG and Stinson are not even in the same class.
