What's funny is we've had the 16 over a 1 finally, but truthfully I don't think that game really gets talked about all that much come tournament time. It's mentioned of course, but still to this day there is almost always a shot of the Hampton coach, again because the celebration was really iconic.

The VA loss also wasn't even a 'classic' because there was no drama at the end or anything. They flat out got smoked.

ISU was the 4th 2 seed to lose to a 15.

I remember watching Santa Clara beat 'Zona. Steve Nash who is listed as a reserve on sports reference hit some big free throws late iirc.

Ah yes I forgot about that one and of course the original Richmond over Syracuse.

But it wasn't. Coppin State had already pulled the 15/2 over South Carolina years ago. Unless you are talking overall seeding, which nobody truly cares about. A 1 is a 1 and 2 is a 2 when comparing them to 16's and 15's.

Also Missouri I believe was still the biggest favorite (-30.5 possibly?) to lose in the 1st Round when they lost to Norfolk State, so it's just funny ESPN used that '01 tournament of all the ones with a 15/2. Hell we've had a couple of 15's make the Sweet 16, which is more impressive than a single upset.

I think ISU-Hampton might have been the largest spread of the four 2/15's until Missouri's line was higher and surpassed it.

All the more reason to talk about it though. It wasn't some half-court shot or buzzer beater. Yes that is more dramatic to sell and relive, but I remember that game like you mentioned. UMBC beat the crap out of UVA that night.

I think the 'shock' factor of huge upsets has worn off too since it was becoming so common.

Can you imagine if Duke gets beat in 1992? Heck even when AZ beat KU in '97 it was pretty amazing.

I think this is a very good point. It's just not a thing that totally surprises people anymore because the talent is dispersed AND these good players are leaving for the NBA/going pro all over the place, so you don't get teams that have really high-end talent that gel for 2-3 years. That would be more of a shocker if players were here all four years, as some of these teams that have put a lot of players in the league would have been stacked beyond belief.

Random note: At least one 11 seed has beaten a 6 seed in 16 straight tournaments. (Source: Athlon).

(Edit: might as well add the link from which I sourced -- just happen to be reading it ... some cool info)

Kind of fun that Wright State is playing at UD. What are the odds? UD has a big arena. Only about 1000 less seats than Hilton.

It's a cool, non-traditional arena. I was there back in 2013 for our first and second round games against Notre Dame (Yea!) and Ohio State (sigh....).
