My guess is that 1% of those with a cherokee go off road.

And I think that's a valid statement if you're talking a Rubicon. The new cherokee, however would be like giving up nearly all of the off road capability of the Rube, and nearly all of the reliability of the CR-V to end up somewhere just to the off road side of the CR-V.

But the CR-V and Escape are "chick cars" which is a more important thing to consider :realmad:

I had a GC for around 4 years. I put a lot of miles on my vehicles (I travel for work and love going to CO). I will never forget the fact that I had it in the shop three times in the first two months of ownership. She ran great after that but at around 90k I started getting nervous. Ended up trading it in for a 4Runner. The Jeep was very easy to use and always said it would be great for someone who didn't know what they were doing (from an off-roading standpoint). I just wanted something a little more reliable...also a benefit that it doesn't depreciate as fast either 
Looking at MidSize SUV/Crossovers "for a friend". Pretty much settled on the Mazda CX-5. Yeah, could use a bit more cargo space but when picking a mid-size you get what you get. Haven't pulled the trigger yet, though.
Bought a Jeep Compass about a year ago. Apparently everyone except for me hates this car. I don't need bells and whistles. Price was low, drives great, decent MPG, good storage, etc. Perfect small SUV IMO.

Yah, I have never bought into the whole chick car thingy either. I used to own a 1994 Miata which some called a chick car. Sure it was not a Porsche 911 but it was a nice little throwback to the MGB I drove in college. Just as fun to drive and 100x more reliable.

Had a Grand Cherokee several years ago. Tighter interior space compared to competitors (shoulder, hip, and leg room), worse gas mileage, more recalls. Not sure if design and quality control at Dodge is better after the Mercedes and now Fiat ownership.

I have about 150,000 miles on my Grand Cherokee and it's held up fine. Beyond tires and brakes the only thing to go bad is the window motors. The Jeep inline 6 will outlast the rest of the vehicle. If you're a little careless when parking or backing up I can confirm that a Jeep will destroy a garbage can without a dent or go over a curb and back without a scratch. Won't get that out of a chick car. But again, horrible gas milage.
I bought a used 2012 grand Cherokee in 2014, and just passed 130k miles on it. Great gas mileage for the size (26 hwy), and much more space than the Cherokee.
