And that extra section, whether it be tower or the final crossbeam part, came sometime today... i think you can barely see its there in that picture you just linked, and its not there at the noon shot from today. [/img]

Yep, you were right. It's on there now:

I like watching the live video on cyclones.com website, something strange about watching these little men in yellow shirts and hardhats working on that monstrous steel structure. The traffic in the background keeps it real. Thank you JP, this will be my top rated TV series of the summer!

Not sure if anyone has discussed this, haven't had much time to check up on this during the summer.

But - is there going to be seating on the top of this thing? Would be an awesome view.

It is currently 9:45 on a friday night and I see at least 3 or 4 on the balcony. Not sure if they are workers or watchers but the north stadium lights are on and pointed toward the project for extra lighting. Are they already in catch up mode?

Don't know what was going on, but it isn't unusual to see the lights on at the stadium during the summer. It is for recruiting. The people on the balcony may just be recruits.

A couple of observations. First, is the crane they are using now one of the cranes they will use to put the crossbeam in place? It looks like the same series as the all-terrain Grove GMK7550 crane mentioned in post #110. Hard to tell what model it is sitting behind all that steel, but it appears to have the height capacity and it handled those smaller sections easily.

Second, late afternoon yesterday, they were using a bobcat to break out a couple sections of concrete along its west edge between the west tower and the crossbeam section. I think they were also digging into the hillside, but it was hard to tell because it was on the edge of the video feed. Are they preparing the site to place the crane? The sections of concrete removed are about 30 ft apart which matches the specs for the crane’s pad placement.

Lastly, if you look closely at the crossbeam section, you can see the 4 attachment points the cranes will use to lift it into place. You can see them along the top edge. They are 1 section in from each end.

Yeah, that was my first thought too, but i opened up the video last night and definitely saw workers down there on the ground. Those on the balcony couldve been recruits, yes, but the lights were likely on for the construction crew.

The place I have an internship over the summer did some sampling of the footings for the two supports. I wasn't lucky enough to be put on that job though

The crane insure now is a grove 5200 series and for comparison sake this crane can only lift 86,000 pounds at 148.8 stick length and 25 feet away... The biggest question that looms is how much does the actual cross truss weigh and then the determination can be made to what cranes are needed. Hard to tell exactly when the total tonnage of section is unclear... All speculation at this point

Shouldn't be an issue with the crane company having big enough cranes. The crane company, crane rental & rigging, all over the Midwest has a grove gmk7550 550 ton mobile crAne, a liebherr ltm 1500 600 ton crane and a liebherr ltm 1400 500 ton crane which I would believe well see two of the three listed and with the pick on Monday of next week these cranes should hopefully be onside this Friday thru sundAy to be ready early Monday for preparations.

What the heck is that thing they have on top of the building right now?

Looks a combination of scaffolding and some long (20'+) aluminum pick boards. I wonder of they need those to access video board components after they set the crossbeam? If they were simply concerned about protecting the glass in the Jake they'd just use plywood and some 4x4s.
